Problem is, in most States they cannot be involuntarily committed UNTIL they "ACT OUT".
Nothing like closing the barn door after the horse gets out.
Well the way things are going the libs might someday declare that being conservative is a form of mental illness.
Look how the APA declared that homosexuality is normal.
As president, as part of his first budget, Reagan rescinded the Mental Health Systems Act of 1980.
A problem is in the assumption that their "meds" make them normal. They permit them to PASS for normal, until they have a violent episode.
The problem seems to be the meds, they dont take their meds.

The meds don’t make many of them feel good. We are trading bars and walls for voluntary chemical straight jackets. And the choice to take the meds is left in the hands of the very person with the thought-disorder.
As a country we have let down the mentally ill. Not only do we have to be protected from some of them, but they need to be protected from some of us. They are the most predated group of homeless. And when the are not homeless we place them in apartments and efficiencies and pretend that they will be visited daily by caseworkers. They often beg for congregant housing and more oversight. No one who is back on their medications and clearing, is happy over the fact that they ran naked through town and was wrestled to the ground and tazed by police.

Good luck with that. A little more than half of the country would disagree with them.
Very strongly.
IIRC, some states require disclosure if a person’s ever received SSI payments when applying for gun permits.
I'm really skeptical about whether Carter's MHSA would really have solved problems without creating more. If it had survived we'd probably be talking about it as another boondoggle or money pit. Or as with Kennedy's CMHA we might be wondering why government never funded the thing.
Reagan and Congress decided to keep mental health more of a state concern, as it had been for years, with the federal government providing block grants, rather than running the whole thing. Maybe that was a mistake, maybe not.
My point was more that Reagan didn't let the mentally ill out of asylums or close them down or end involuntary commitment. All of that was part of a larger societal process that had been going on for over a decade.
....with the side bonus that no Democrat would ever be elected again. The downside is that we'd have to support them, but then we do that anyway, and at least we wouldn't have to listen to them talk.
We can disagree on the details, but my point remains...the battle cry is Mental Health!...until it comes time to pay for it.
