If you know you only have one (or 3) chance to shoot the deer, you are going to take your time and make sure it is a kill shot. If you know you have 11 chances to "spray" the deer you will be a little more free with the trigger which will result in more wounded deer.
I answered my own question by looking up the PA hunting laws. I guess you can’t even use semi-auto shotguns.
What a mind-numbingly stupid state! The most popular shotgun in America is illegal to use in PA, the Remington 1100.

harvesting game?
You hunt, you kill animals. Nothing wrong with saying that. Euphemisms. Animals ain’t crops.
Pretty much....
Most Americans who have ever watched Bambi have the idea that hunters are a bunch of psychotic maniacs blazing away at anything that moves in the woods.
Lord, it’s amazing how much self-righteous ignorance you can squeeze into one fud.
Suffice it to say that the rest of America gets along just fine with semi-autos, despite the fact that some nimrods can’t be bothered to look at bordering states to see how well things are working out.
“...You simply have to understand the limitations of the cartridge....”
Roger that. As with everything else, it’s designed to operate within a specific envelop and perform a specific job.
It’ll punch holes. A lung shot or a heart shot will drop a deer (eventually)... so you might have to track it a little bit. But it’ll do the job.
>>The 50 Beowulf has the ballistics of the 45-70 which some say is too much for deer.<<
You can use a .50 BMG with a head shot. It will de-bone and skin the critter with just one shot.
I looked at the CA regulations and could find nothing that limits the number of rounds for a repeating rifle used for hunting. On the other hand, there is a limit (3 round rounds) for a repeating shotgun. http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=353601
That’s what I find weird about the PA law (not being all that familiar with it until now)
Given the preponderance of M1 Garands in civilian (incl former soldiers) hands following WWII/Korea and as iirc the mainstay weapon of the CMP, it’s really surprising that a large state with a strong hunting community would ban them.
Heck, I think that I remember reading that Dick Winters (of Band of Brothers fame, long time resident of Hershey PA) had a full auto Garand (called a “Shifty Powers Special”, after the fellow Co.E 506 PIR member who figured out a trick to making it) that he would hunt with ...
So maybe this is a much more recent law?
PSL rocks!!!
Yeah, but even though I’m not a deer hunter, I know hogs: You could have a hundred-round magazine - it’s kinda irrelevant - you really only have a couple of seconds to get the right shot for the kill on an animal that can run so fast.
If in that short span of time you could get 3 aimed shots versus 1 then I don’t have any complaints against that if it’s helping that critter get to Jesus a little faster.
This guy seems to be asserting that there is NO reason - ever - for more than one shot... it just doesn’t sound like someone who has hunted very often. If ever.
(Oh, and you can wound a bird just as easy as kill it with shot. If I recall, the average hunter fires 5 shells for each dove killed (speaking in averages). That means you get ‘clips’ that will bring the bird down, but don’t kill it. Always makes me sad when I walk up on a flapping bird.)
Those are all anti-gun code words and these red flags mark this guy as a poser, like the ones who start off "I'm an NRA member/hunter/gun collector, BUT . . ."
No an AR 15 is .223 or .5.56. There are all kinds of ARs AR 10’s come in .308 7/62 X51. Mossberg and Colt build some in .22 but they call them AR .22
Why do we have to validate AR’s for big game hunting? Personally I think we all need to just stand up and validate what the AR 15 is for and that’s personal defense agains’t whoever and whatever may come our way with a bad attitude. Just sayin. :-)
I use a 12-gauge on quail (since all of my shotguns are 12-gauge), and that’s because most of the shots I get are 25 to 35 yards, even early in the season. Few birds are hit by more than two or three pellets, probably because I’m not that good with a shotgun. I can remember only one bird that was destroyed, when I must have hit it with the entire column at about 12 yards.
The AR-15 in .22 was done long before Mossberg and Colt jumped into the game. I think S&W was the first major manufactures to come out with a dedicated platform for the .22 but Spikes Tactical and Tactical Solutions were making dedicated uppers before any major manufacturer was putting out dedicated .22 ARs. The first Atchisson .22 conversion kit for the AR15 was released in the mid 70's so there is quite a history there.
Hey Fudd, why do the police need AR’s?
As far as I'm concerned we don't. Hunting is irrelevant to the right to keep and bear arms.
