Turkey has got to be looking at this with some serious trepidation. If the Kurds actually get a fair amount of cash, they’re going to unite with their fellow people across the border in Turkey. On the positive side, that’s going to make a good solid buffer between them and ISIS. On the negative side, a good chunk of their country will leave.

Oh, and a big thumbs up to the Kurds to sticking it to both the Sunnis and Shites.

IINM, the part of Turkey that is inhabited primarily by Kurds includes the headwaters of both the Tigris and Euphrates. That would make “Kurdistan” (constituted as above) both an oil giant and a water-surplus country- a first in the Middle East.

Probably for that reason, the Turks will go to war rather than allow it to happen.
