Don't make me come back there, is more or less what U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn said on the eve of Wednesday night's debate between the two men most likely to succeed him.

Lankford presents himself as problem-solver who immerses himself in the details of policy and government. He is dismissive of politicians who show up for press conferences but don't do their homework. He sees himself as a realist with ideals. Shannon has signed on with the Ted Cruz-Sarah Palin wing of the GOP. He talks about abolishing the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Education and doing away the minimum wage and most federal health care programs. Some of Shannon's signature initiatives as Speaker of the Oklahoma House of Representatives didn't turn out exactly the way he planned, or have been portrayed, but for the most part he said no to every spending bill that came his way.

Shannon's critics say he sometimes cut off state government's nose to spite its face.

“I like Coburn, but it’s time to have a new face.”

Coburn is seriously ill or he would not be stepping down.

If you want a new face, you shall have him.

And as I said I like him. That said, it’s important to remember Coburn himself said that people stayed in DC too long.
