Florida governor signs law allowing limited medical marijuana use

(Reuters) - Florida Governor Rick Scott signed a law on Monday allowing for the limited use of a special strain of marijuana to treat epileptic seizures and other diseases.

State lawmakers passed the measure this spring with bipartisan support after impassioned appeals from parents seeking access to the form of marijuana known as "Charlotte's Web," named for a Colorado girl whose epileptic seizures have shown some response to the drug.

“As a father and grandfather, you never want to see kids suffer," Scott, a Republican, said in a statement. "I am proud to stand today with families who deserve the ability to provide their children with the best treatment available.”

The new law will severely limit marijuana sales, keeping them well below those in Colorado and Washington state, where recreational marijuana has been legalized.

The Florida law allows use of the drug for people suffering from epilepsy, cancer and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

The Charlotte's Web substance is not for smoking and is specially cultivated to be very low in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the element that gets users high.

It's the proper use of the State's inherent police powers. If the citizens of the state don't like it, they can change the government and the law.

Beats having the feds involved outside of their constitutional mandate.

It should ALWAYS remain illegal ... except in tightly controlled situations, with a doctor’s prescription and a recognized and accepted treatment plan ... just like any other drug that is only issued under doctor’s orders and is illegal to have otherwise.

While I normally hate the feds telling us what we can and can't do, I would be very, very cautious about the implementation of a medical marijuana law. Marijuana can only be medical insofar as ignorance is bliss; a cursory observance of youth and popular culture can observe the heavy usage of marijuana, and the social liberalism and rock bottom IQs caused by marijuana.
There are surely better painkillers out there without the nasty side effects of marijuana, and the fact that liberals and libertarians are so strident in legalizing the substance should be worrying, as those people are less than trustworthy.

You also open the door to snake oil salesmen and coffee enema treatments under insurance plans.

Quack treatments with no medicinal benefit.

Well if it takes away the getting high part its ok then. Those who want to smoke the pot will prolly be upset over it tho.

Why is it pro-pot advocates can’t defend pot on its own? Every dang time they mention alcohol. Its shows a weakness in their defense.

if these users practiced personal responsibility and didn’t inflict their behavior on taxpayers and other innocent bystanders I would agree with your point.

The legislature is trying to head off the inevitable and broader ballot initiative.

I guess you have never encountered a friend suffering from cancer treatments, who was physically helped by ingesting the dried leaves of a common plant.

Oh yeah, it needs to be “tightly controlled” because it is easy and cheap to grow , and it would cut into pharmacy and government profits if people just grew a few plants in their own backyards.
Like aloe leaves are in competition with Neosporin. LOL!

Prohibition of alcohol did not work.
Neither does the criminalization of marijuana.
