Power Players
He once worked for Sarah Palin and has been dubbed a protégé of Condoleezza Rice.
Now Dan Sullivan is fighting to become a high-profile conservative brand name of his own, trying to unseat Democratic Sen. Mark Begich of Alaska in one of the most closely watched political races of the year.
Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin appointed Sullivan attorney general in 2009. Before that he worked within President George W. Bushs inner circle as a senior adviser to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Now, Sullivan has the task of convincing GOP primary voters that he is Alaskan enough, among other things, to win a spot on the ballot in November.
Alaska in many ways is a mindset, said Sullivan, who some have accused of being a carpetbagger born in Ohio, without legitimate Alaskan roots. I moved to Alaska 17 years ago, was married 20 years ago, my kids and family were raised in Alaska I've dedicated my life to my great state and my family has and we love it up there.
While Sullivan describes both Palin and Rice as great bosses, he insists that he stands on his own.
"You know protégé, look I learned a lot from her [Condoleezza Rice], I learned a lot from Sarah Palin, he said.
Rice has come to Sullivans aid with an endorsement in the race, but Palin has yet to do the same. The former governor and vice presidential candidates silence in the race is likely due in part to the fact that she endorsed Sullivans Tea Party opponent, Joe Miller, in the last Alaskan Senate race in 2010....

Alaska ping.
Go Dan go! Go Sarah go! Take America and Alaska back! Woo hoo!
So “what” is he? Rice and Palin are not equals ideologically. Sounds like a conservative reaching for a moderate stance. We don’t need another Lindsey Graham.
Palin hasn't endorsed him.
"Rice has come to Sullivan's aid with an endorsement in the race, but Palin has yet to do the same"
Palin hasn't endorsed Sullivan because he has been part of the movement to undo what Palin did as governor.
Sullivan's key job in the Alaska govt was not being Palin's AG. It was being head of the DNR, and Parnell appointed him to that job, replacing Tom Irwin, who Palin appointed.
Senator turned Governor Murkowski set up the Alaska natural gas line the way he wanted, and in the process fired Tom Irwin.
Palin, wanted a different pipeline and she campaigned for governor on rehiring Tom Irwin. She won, rehired Tom Irwin, and they killed Murkowski's pipeline, replacing it with Palin's pipeline, which never got built.
When Parnell won his election for governor, he replaced Tom Irwin with Dan Sullivan because of Sullivan's experience and connections at the US State Dept, which they would need if they were going to kill Palin's pipeline and shift back to Murkowski's pipeline and export the gas to Asia.
Its not just Palin's pipeline that has been undone, Parnell has also undone the Palin/Irwin tax increase on oil.
Don’t know much about him but I’ve met his brother. He’s COB and President of my firm’s parent company.
The work that Sarah Palin did in Alaska was not supported by the political machine (Murkowski and Company) and if this Dan Sullivan guy does the work of the Murkowskis to undo Sarah Palin’s work as governor, he doesn’t deserve to be a United States Senator.
Sarah Palin is good and Condi Rice isn’t good.
That makes this Dan Sullivan guy smell as a candidate.
Case in point.
Israel.
Sarah Palin is a 100 percent supporter of Israel.
Condi Rice has been a critic of Israel for defending itself from terrorism.
A few years after 9/11 the Israeli’s hit back at the terrorists Gaza for attacking Israel and Rice condemned them..
I still remember El Rushbo expressing his incredulity at the whole thing but the W Bush Administration was always thoroughly RINO with Condi Rice an important part of that pushing Israel to the “peace” table just like Kerry does today.
Ping for later.
Ping for later.
But, eventually, she realized that she had made mistakes. But she didn't rectify the problem, because she didn't want to admit that she had been wrong. Instead she resigned, leaving Alaska on the wrong policy track until Parnell could be elected to governor, enabling him to begin the policy shift. That took time because the dems fought him.
If she had remained governor, admitted that she had been wrong, and made the changes, it would have happened a lot quicker. This would have also opened the door for a presidential run.
Instead, she realized she could become a political gadfly and media darling and make a lot more money for very little work. And had it not been for Sarah Palin endorsing right wing kooks, the GOP would have taken the US Senate long ago.
I’ll wait until I hear from Sarah on this Sullivan guy. Doesn’t sound too great.
Is this all we have?
Palin opposed the corrupt political machine of the GOPe and its cronyism with special interests in Alaska.
Ironically, it was Frank Murkowski who brought her in to chair the Oil and Gas Commission.
Once in there she learned that her job was to do what the Alaska GOP Chairman Randy Ruederich (who sat on the commission with her) wanted to make big campaign contributors happy.
Palin helped to expose the corruption of the Murkowski political operation and beat Frank Murkowski in the Republican Primary for governor in 2006.
The rest is history but after her rise to national prominence in 2008 the Democrats who supported her against the machine in the legislature walked away.
She was unable to get a clean and decent legislative agenda past the corrupt GOPe machine in the legislature, so she resigned.
