As Republican House members filed into the basement meeting room to say goodbye to Eric Cantor, they pushed past reporters in the packed hallway, largely ignoring shouted questions about the race for Republican Majority Leader.
But Texas Representative Pete Sessions strode up to the cameras and explained why he was the best candidate.
There he goes, one House member muttered as he witnessed the scene. Other congressmen in the hall chuckled in response.
Sessions couldnt have made it any clearer why he was running: to send a message to the White House on immigration reform.
For Sessions it was likely a clear conclusion from Cantors loss. The anti-amnesty critics faulted Cantor for vowing to work with the Obama administration on immigration reform, and Cantor lost his primary.
"I think this administration needs to be prodded and reminded that the entire sovereignty of the United States is at risk if we do not secure our border--north, south, east, and west, Sessions told reporters. The things which are occurring at our border must be stopped and must be controlled before we do anything else that encourages people to come here."
Sessions just recently beat a Tea Party challenger in his own primary who campaigned against him for his immigration stance.
Katrina Pierson, who was endorsed by former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, challenged Sessions for endorsing "a guest worker program, which would allow illegal immigrants to obtain legal status.
Border security, border security, and border security, he told Washington Post reporter Robert Costa in an interview on his run in the race for House leadership.

And a Majority Leader from a republican state (Texas) would be better than one from a democrat state (California).
The Va. election was a “pot shot’ heard round the world.
McCarthy Heritage rating 42%
Sessions Heritage rating 70%
Sessions talks a big game during primaries on immigration.
Border security = more empty promises
Sessions is a fraud - an amnesty wolf in sheep’s clothing. Do not support him.
Unfortunately, Hensarling or another solid conservative is not stepping up to the plate.
It looks like it’s either Sessins or McCarthy. McCarthy is worse. Very depressing.
Too bad he doesn’t push it any other time...
That may be true but it looks like he may be our best bet at this point. I suspect taking Cantor down has made him a bit more careful.
No doubt. But if you look at Sessions statement, he mentions nothing
about amnesty. He only talks about border security. Border security
and amnesty are two separate issues.
Yes he is better than a CA amnesty pimp, but not as good as Jeb.
Here is a third TEA Party Platform:
* Close and seal the Southern US Border, all 2,000 + miles of it.
* Cancel NAFTA.
* Abolish all Federal, State and Local Welfare payments to non-citizens of the USA.
* Block all money transfers to Mexico, or other any Country South of our Southern Border.
* Eat lunch.
* After lunch, pass and sign Federal Penalty law to anyone who hires an Illegal Alien Invader, with a fine of $1,000 per day per alien.
* String Concertina Wire Holding-Pen Stockades at 100 mile intervals for the newly captured gotta-ways.
* Be as hostile to Mexicans as the Mexicans have been to the US Marine held and tortured in Prison by the Mexican Guards for the last two months.
* Hire Greyhound Bus Company to transport Illegal Alien Invaders to Sheriff Joe Arpaios Chain Link Desert Spa near Phoenix, Arizona.
* Eat supper.
“Yes he is better than a CA amnesty pimp, but not as good as Jeb.”
Maybe Jeb is still after the ultimate prize, becoming Speaker.
I think Hensarling is holding out for Boehner’s position, not planning to compete for the less influential number two spot.
Why isn’t Jeb Hensarling in the conversation?
Maybe.
I did notice Jeb’s comment was “he was not running for leadership next
week”. Next week being the key words in his statement.
So you could be accurate.
Good point. I'd be willing to accept Sessions as Leader if we got Hensarling as Speaker. After Cantor's defeat and the destruction wrought on GOPe in the TX primaries perhaps Sessions can be kept in check.
“Why isnt Jeb Hensarling in the conversation?”
He said this morning that he’s not running for Majority Leader.
