Nationally, increased use of contraception pushed down the rate to its lowest -- 16.9 per 1,000 women in 2011 -- since the procedure was legalized in 1973, according to the New York-based Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive health researcher.

Abortion patients from Detroit said in interviews last week that they were unable to afford birth control.

I suspect abortion is the single biggest killer. Detroit has some very fine hospitals that are full of Canadians who can afford to get care in them.

I do know that blacks have a higher rate of preterm babies, which is a risk factor in learning disabilities..

..and, the studies have not found a single factor to blame..not poverty, not lack of education..

..because it happens with black women with high education who take very good care of themselves and eat right and don't smoke nor drink nor do drugs...

my dil is one of them...both kids preterm and underweight...yet my dil has always been fastidious about her health...

its something to do with higher rates of hypertension in blacks....
