Murder investigation?????

Yup. Somebody died in the commission of a crime. If the other scumbag survives, he'll be tried for felony murder.

Two purps, one dead. The second is considered a murderer as they were acting together when the one was killed..

Dad ‘did’ homicide. I don’t like to use the term ‘committed’ ‘cause that implies criminality. Homicide is the intentional killing of another. It may or may not be criminal. When a condemned criminal is executed, the manner of death is often listed as ‘judicial homicide’. Intentional, but nice and legal. All circumstances here indicate that the homicide done by the father was justifiable as defense of self or another from deadly force and hence not criminal. A homicide investigation is done to establish all of those facts.

On the other hand, as other posters have pointed out, the surviving perp was engaged in felony that caused the death of another. Intentional or not, victim, conspirator, innocent bystander it matters not. Most states define that as murder in the second degree.
