Aware that wisdom comes from asking the right questions, not identifying the wrong answers, Professor Allan Bloom blasted American universities in 1987 for exacerbating youthful indiscretion. In his seminal book, The Closing of the American Mind: How Higher Education Has Failed Democracy and Impoverished the Souls of Today's Student, Bloom argued that students were graduating into a complex and conflict-riddled world without the insights that come from the clash of opposing viewpoints. Thirty years hence, are the proliferating controversies plaguing America the consequence? Real advance, Albert Einstein revealed, requires the creative imagination "to raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle.” We can’t solve problems, Einstein believed, by applying the same “thinking we used when we created them." Nevertheless, “tolerance enforcers” wielding assumed moral superiority and a heckler’s veto have transformed campuses into close-minded sanctuaries. Cocooned away, students are safe from potential insult, reflective thought, disagreement – and thus from real life.

When your voter base is a bunch of intellectually lazy you are going to get incompetent leadership. This is the foundation of my belief that the movie "Idiocracy" is more of a documentary than a comedy.

Well, while I agree with a lot of this the writer seems clueless about the human heart. "The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Who can know it?" People are certainly corrupted by bad company and accountability does help all of us from living selfishly but it goes further than that. We are not good people that sometimes do bad things otherwise the death of Christ does not seem so needed. The testimony of scripture is that a problem exists for the whole human race that is incurable by human effort and "good deeds." The book of James (the whole book but especially) chapter 4 states it clearly. "What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. 4 You adulterous people,[a] don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us[b]? 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud  but shows favor to the humble.”[c] 7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up." Sin has corrupted our desires and passions perverting them. Unless we return to our Creator there is no hope of changing the human heart. But he is able, loving and willing to do so. He will heal our nation as well but we have to come to him and submit to his authority and his prescription for repentance.
