The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose last week, but the underlying trend continued to point to a firming labor market.

While jobless claims have been choppy in recent weeks because of problems seasonally adjusting the data around moving holidays such as Easter and Passover, they have continued to suggest the jobs market was strengthening.

Once you drive enough people out of the labor market, those remaining will have stronger negotiating power. It was true in Henry VIII's England. It will be true in ObaMao's America.

Now, whether they will actually be interested in working given all the negative incentives for doing so is quite another matter.

My specialty is labor economics and I've been a fly on the wall at liberal gatherings actually discussing these topics. Their ideal situation is for roughly 25% of the workforce to be in the labor market full-time and the overwhelming part of that 25% to be employed through government unions, labor unions and other cartels which can easily be controlled. Everyone else is supposed to scrape by on training subsidies (including college loans), pensions or the dole. It makes for a very compliant populace.

I kid you not. I've heard it with my own ears.

Well, if it isn't the calendar, it's the weather. If it isn't the weather, it's a tsunami, or the Republicans, or ATM machines, or not enough stimulus money, or greedy corporations not spending their hoarded cash just because they are racists, or maybe racism in general, or George W. Bush deliberately sabotaging it so that Obama won't succeed, or maybe it was Europe, or the Tea Party, or, well, just about everything except Obama's staggeringly anti-business, anti-growth policies.

Listen, he put in tough EPA coal regulations that will come online AFTER he leaves office, so that, conveniently, he will not have to deal with the consequences. He never accepts responsibility for anything, even though he is directly responsible.
