So I'd heard about Eddie Slovik since I was a kid. And I probably even watched the TV movie. I reread his story and find that he was a true scoundrel.
It was the exact right thing for them to courtmartial and execute him. He was on record as believing that even after being courtmartialed he would only spend a bit of time in jail. This was exactly what the military didn't need: a bunch of soldiers deserting because they thought the penalty would be a few years in jail before being pardoned.
However pathetic Slovik was, this Bergdahl character seems even worse. Even before going into the military his statements suggest he wasn't going to take his duties seriously.
That he was "rescued" from the Taliban and gets to walk free when the lesser weasel Slovik was executed is a true testament to how values have dissipated over the past few decades.

I was hoping someone would pick up the reference from
my post on Eddie Slovik from Tuesday and bring it forward to the mainstream.

I say since this deserter cost the lives of at least 7 men, plus he assisted the enemy in killing American troops, I think he needs to get court martial-ed, convicted and shot. Period. We have no room for deserters in our all volunteer military.

Remember the movie. May have been one of or the first Martin Sheen movie.
Nothing close will happen to Bergdahl. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is never tried for anything.
