The Shifting Sands of Obama’s Bergdahl Defense
Foreign Policy ^

Posted on 06/04/2014 10:22:34 AM PDT by nickcarraway

If America's newly free POW really was a deserter, the White House is in deep trouble.

On Sunday, National Security Advisor Susan Rice said former American prisoner of war Bowe Bergdahl served with "honor and distinction" before he was captured by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Two days later, the secretary of the Army said the branch will investigate whether Bergdahl deserted his fellow soldiers -- an allegation that if true would transform the public perception of the POW and drastically complicate the White House's attempts to defend its prisoner exchange, which involved the release of five Taliban operatives from Guantanamo Bay.

On Tuesday, a fresh wave of lawmakers, including a top Senate Democrat, criticized the Obama administration's handling of Bergdahl's release. Complaints centered on four basic issues. Some critics oppose the very idea of trading five Guantanamo detainees for a U.S. soldier given the age-old mantra that the United States does not negotiate with terrorists (though historically, it sometimes has). Others say the administration broke the law by failing to comply with legislation requiring the president give 30-days notice to Congress before moving any prisoners out of Guantanamo Bay. Still others believe that given Bergdahl's potential status as a "deserter," the administration gave up too much in releasing five hardened Taliban operatives in exchange for his release. Lastly, some members of Congress believe the White House should've never championed Bergdahl as a hero given the unknown circumstances of his abduction.

These TRAITORS armed al Qaeda.

There was no ACCOUNTABILITY because of the
absent, abdicating, whoring, EXEMPT Congress.

So, OF COURSE they regard a deserter as an American “hero”.

As Commander in Chief, Obama has the authority to thwart any charges to be brought against Bergdahl. Anyone here think he would allow them?

Unknown? B.S. ...they knew from day 1 he walked off base.

Just like they knew from day 1 Benghazi was a terrorist attack.

Using Obama’s take on this, if we had Rommel, Tojo, Yamamoto, and a couple of other Axis Generals in Custody during WWII, it wouldn’t have been a problem for FDR to trade them all for one American POW Deserter.

Hero or traitor — it doesn’t matter.

Trading five top terrorists for him is insanity.

GREAT AND TO THE POINT!!!

Serving the country with great honor...

Birds of a feather... The Obamas and the Gerdahls share the same love for the United States.

Remember Obama’s spiritual leader, Rev Wright, call to pray: “God damn America.”

Report: US Intel Officials Worry Bergdahl Became ‘Active Collaborator With the Enemy’
Guy Benson
TOWNHALL 6/3/2014

http://townhall.com/tipsheet/guybenson/2014/06/03/oh-my-us-intel-officials-worried-bergdahl-may-have-been-active-collaborator-with-the-enemy-n1846705/print

An astonishing scoop last night from Fox News’ James Rosen — whose access to sources has, ahem, attracted the Obama administration’s intense scrutiny in the not-so-distant past. Whoa:

A senior official confirms to Fox News that the conduct of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl — both in his final stretch of active duty in Afghanistan and then, too, during his time when he lived among the Taliban — has been thoroughly investigated by the U.S. intelligence community and is the subject of “a major classified file.” In conveying as much, the Defense Department source confirmed to Fox News that many within the intelligence community harbor serious outstanding concerns not only that Bergdahl may have been a deserter but that he may have been an active collaborator with the enemy. The Pentagon official added pointedly that no relevant congressional committee has sought access to the classified file, but that if such a request were made, key committee chairs would, under previous precedent, likely be granted access to it. Separately, the Pentagon confirmed Monday that it is looking into claims Americans died during the search for Bergdahl...Sources told Fox News that many officials in the Executive Branch are “quite baffled” by the White House’s decision to allow the president to stand alongside Bergdahl’s father this past weekend, given the father’s history of controversial statements, emails and online posts.

The Weekly Standard’s Stephen Hayes is also out with a searing piece in which soldiers from Bergdahl’s former platoon forcefully reject Susan Rice’s description of the former hostage as having served the US with “honor and distinction:”

“That’s not true,” says Specialist Cody Full, who served in the same platoon as Bergdahl, and whose tweets over the weekend as @CodyFNfootball offered an early firsthand account of Bergdahl’s departure. “He was not a hero. What he did was not honorable. He knowingly deserted and put thousands of people in danger because he did. We swore to an oath and we upheld ours. He did not.” “He walked off—and ‘walked off’ is a nice way to put it,” says Specialist Josh Cornelison, the medic in Bergdahl’s platoon. “He was accounted for late that afternoon. He very specifically planned to walk out in the middle of the night.” “He was a deserter,” says Specialist Full. “There’s no question in the minds of anyone in our platoon.”...One uncomfortable question that has vexed those involved in the Bergdahl case: Was Bergdahl merely a deserter or was he, possibly, a Taliban collaborator? ...Several military officials who spoke with THE WEEKLY STANDARD noted privately that Taliban attacks on U.S. forces in the Paktika province seemed to increase in frequency and effectiveness...[Some] wonder whether Bergdahl helped the Taliban, either willfully or under duress. In the hours after he disappeared, according to sources familiar with the intelligence, U.S. troops received an intelligence report that Bergdahl stopped in a local village and asked how to find the Taliban.

More evidence pointing to desertion continues to emerge, including this account from NBC News, which has been echoed elsewhere:

Susan Rice just misspoke. She meant to say that Bergdahl served the Taliban with honor and distinction after he defected.

How does this impact the legal gov and anyone who supported us in Afghanistan? I’d think they’ll now be red meat for the Taliban. What about our European allies who fought alongside the US in Afghanistan? They can’t be thrilled with the precedent.

the release of five Taliban operatives

Operatives? These five are essentially the War Council or Board of Directors of the Taliban. To call them "operatives" is the understatement of the year.

“Honor” and “distinction” obviously mean something vastly different to the Current Regime, than was ever recorded in any dictionary anywhere.

Honor (n.) 1. Good name or public esteem, reputation, recognition; 2. Privilege; 3. Person of superior standing; 4. Exalted title or rank; 5. Chastity; 6. Integrity - well, you get the idea.

Distinction (n.) The quality or state of being distinguished, recognition, worthiness

Almost none of the above applies to Bowe Bergdahl.
