Trying to Reclaim Leadership on Climate Change
New York Times ^ | JUNE 1, 2014 | JUSTIN GILLIS and HENRY FOUNTAIN

Posted on 06/02/2014 6:30:25 AM PDT by LucianOfSamasota

At the end of his first year in office, President Obama flew to Copenhagen and made a big promise: that the United States would cut its greenhouse gas emissions substantially by 2020 — a bold and risky pledge that hinged on a balky Congress to make it possible. His efforts became bogged down within months, and Mr. Obama’s pledge to the rest of the world soon looked like a pipe dream.

On Monday, Mr. Obama is planning to bypass Congress and take one of the biggest steps any American president has ever taken on climate change, proposing new rules to cut emissions at power plants. Yet, by itself, the president’s plan will barely nudge the global emissions that scientists say are threatening the welfare of future generations.

“Is it enough to stop climate change? No,” said Ted Nordhaus, chairman of the Breakthrough Institute, an environmental think tank in Oakland, Calif. “No political leader in the world has a serious agenda to do that.”

Even after Mr. Obama’s inability to get his major climate change proposal through Congress in 2010, fate has intervened to help him toward his goal. Thanks partly to a surfeit of natural gas that few people saw coming, emissions in the United States have already fallen 10 percent from 2005 levels and are still heading down, even without Mr. Obama’s new rule.

...a bold and risky pledge that hinged on a balky Congress to make it possible. His efforts became bogged down within months

...Mr. Obama is planning to bypass Congress and take one of the biggest steps any American president has ever taken on climate change,

...the president’s plan will barely nudge the global emissions that scientists say are threatening the welfare of future generations.

...fate has intervened to help him toward his goal.

.It is clear Mr. Obama’s immediate goal is not to solve the emissions problem, but to get the country moving faster in the right direction.

...reclaiming for the country the mantle of international leadership in battling climate change.

...“He’s the first American president to permanently push down the U.S. emissions trajectory and get us within striking distance of the kind of global leadership that will be needed to tackle the problem,”

...Experts say Mr. Obama is slowly piecing together a set of policies that may wind up being at least as effective as the law Congress refused to pass in 2010.

..Perhaps the biggest question about Mr. Obama’s plan is whether it will rev up the engine of American innovation, producing new technology and economic approaches that make the country’s — and the world’s — climate goals seem more achievable.

...For more than a decade, people working in the twin centers of American economic ingenuity, Wall Street and Silicon Valley, have been agitating to get going on the climate problem.

...But some experts said his new plan may at least send a signal to private capital that now is the time to get involved in trying to solve the energy challenge.

I'm just glad they're not biased.

The cost of electricity will rise and the economy will contract.

The NY Times is the last bell ringer on climate change.

They're desperately sad that the quest to sufficiently terrorize the citizenry into accepting the increased government power necessary to fight the imaginary dragon of global warming is melting away like the tears of a drowning polar bear.

Leftists not only want power over others,
but they seek a situation in which they have lifestyles that far surpass those of the majority of Americans.

This is the root of their war on affordable energy. They can’t advance their own lifestyles much further, but they can sure diminish the lifestyles of everyone else.

"even without Mr. Obama’s new rule."

New rule? = same as the old dictatorial rule.

Some power companies are said to be prepared to ignore the edict and let the government take them to court where they will win.

Unfortunately the majority of the American people are no longer capable of understanding the significance or ramifications of Obama’s policies that result in economic contraction. They will however suffer for their ignorance.

Australia has bailed out of this farce, Canada too I believe, and Germany is close

lets talk about china and putin and their willingness to cut back their economies based on junk science, under globull leadership by barry

“globull” leadership indeed

The goal is to deindustrialize this county to make it weaker economically and militarily. The green agenda has an added bonus of controlling the lives of the ordinary citizen since just like government run health care their decisions “affect everyone”.
Bill Clinton said it best, the job of the government is to restrict freedom because the people can’t handle it responsibly and the government needs to take their money because they may not spend it properly.

What makes me laugh, is that we are taxing the SHIT out of our future futures generations, but we are OH SO WORRIED about the air and water 30 years down the road.

I guess my grandchildren won't have a pot to piss in or a roof over their heads, but the air will be supposedly free and clean. Well, maybe clean...I doubt it will be free.

Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma really need to cut off the pipelines to both coasts. They can always sell their gas and oil on the global market.

The development of a Fascist State like Hitler had in 1930’s Germany, and what Obama almost has now in the nearly former USA, depends upon opposition leaders who refuse to lead the opposition, but continue to stay in power by support of their morally weak supporters.

The last attempt to oppose Obama failed when Boehner, Cantor, McConnell and McCain caved in to the stonewalling refusal to negotiate by Reid and Obama in late 2013 and early 2014.

Until effective voter pressure can be brought to bear on the Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate to replace the Republican Leadership in the House and Senate, Obama will continue to “Fundamentally transform the United States of America” into the most powerful Fascist Empire that the World has ever known.

Will these opposition Congressmen and women act before the November 2014 Election, or will they continue to wait to lose again, as usual, to the Left Wing, low information Voter in November, 2014?

BTW, money and reason are wasted on multimillionaire career politicians as they cannot be bought or convinced - - - they are the hardened professional criminal politicians that we have, for decades, elected and tolerated, gratefully for the “free” stuff that they have bought our votes with.

Obama is just doing as he was raised up to do, and will never change.

Our opposition Republican Leaders are doing everything that they can to make sure Obama is successful, and they will never change.

The change must come from opposition House Members and Senators in “both” parties, before low-information voters have made up their minds about whether or not to continue the status quo.

The Summer of 2014 is the last chance for We, the People to force our House and Senate Members to change their leadership before Labor Day, 2014, when early voting begins?

Meanwhile, the Attorney Generals of states like Ohio need to open investigations regarding the bribes being paid by the Saudis to Democrats willing to wreck America.

Those AGs should:

First, require the local EPA slugs to testify under oath.

Then, folllow the money back to Washington — and Mecca...
