"Maine is the most peaceful state"

That is because more and more Mainers are coming to realize that on the eve of June 12, 2018 they will wake up free, free from the Union, free from the UN, free from all of the slavery of federal regulations and free to work and raise a family with no or literally no federal or govt intrusion.

That is why Maine is at peace, the very smell and thought of freedom backed up by no less than eight militias armed and ready to protect the polls and the peace, gives one reason to sleep peacefully and act peacefully.

the Institute for Economics and Peace released their 2012 edition of the "United States Peace Index (USPI).

The article is pointing out a different point, but I always find such ratings subject to the bias of the lister.

I would expect "the Institute for Economics and Peace" to ignore crime rate, while giving postive marks for restricting personal liberties and negative marks for more personal liberty. e.g. "better to be disarmed and dead murder victim, than a violent CCW holder".

Over on the side, one of their criteria is “access to weapons.”

This article is difficult to read and the information is not presented in a very palatable way. That said, it is worth the read:

“After 30,000 interviews, Putnam concludes and reports, against his own progressive convictions, that ethnic and racial diversity can be devastating to communities and destructive of community values."

[snip]

It’s one of the most bitter ironies in human history: Socialism and Diversity are completely incompatible. More evidence against the fallacy of diversity can be derived from Page 32 of the USPI report:

“Economic opportunity has a strong association with peace. Both absolute and relative measures of economic opportunity are significantly associated with peace, as the percentage of families living in poverty, as well as the household Gini coefficient (a measure of income inequality) correlate significantly with the USPI. Only one of the ten most peaceful states has a Gini coefficient higher than .45, and none of the ten most peaceful states has more than 10% of families living in poverty.

[snip]

“Diversity is associated with "reduced democracy, slowed economic growth, falling social cohesion and foreign aid, as well as rising corruption and risk of civil conflict." Ethnic diversity is also associated with "reduced public altruism or social capital, evident in falling volunteerism, government welfare for the aged and sick, public health care and a general loss of trust. Ethnic diversity is second only to lack of democracy in predicting civil war. Globally it correlates negatively with governmental efficiency and prosperity."
