Very good point. It’s sadly amusing that these same people who are complaining about Russia’s aggression and Putin’s intentions today, are in many cases the same ones who downplayed Reagan’s victory over the USSR in the Cold War by stating that ‘the Soviets never were that big of a threat’.

Easy answer - Kaiser Wilhelm. It was no accident that Adolf Hitler cultivated a facial appearance that was a caricature of “Kaiser Bill”. And the Kaiser, who at first supported the concept of National Socialism, was soon disillusioned, as the old aristocracy was swept away and replaced by coarse, vulgar men better fitted to be peasants. A nation that had once been the home of poets and musicians, artists and soldiers, had become nothing more than legions marching to hollow victories, a nation of hysterics and hermits, engulfed by a mob and led by a thousand liars and fanatics.

I’m about half way through William Manchester’s 3 volume biography of Churchill and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in history. The parallel’s with Hitler’s use of ethnic protection excuses, plebiscites, piecemeal destruction of polyglot states, and military force to redress recent geopolitical setbacks is jarring.
Putin seems to lack Hitler’s mad and murderous obsession with hated minorities and outlanders, but may have studied his methods.
Today, are we in the west any more ready to commit ourselves to a horrible war to fulfill past commitments to small and vulnerable allies in eastern Europe than the democracies were in the late 1930’s?
