It seems at best, a state would get back exactly what it paid into federal road taxes; at worst, a state would get back less than what it paid.

If the best a state can get back is what they paid in--and we know that through inefficiencies of money transfers, some of that is spent on overhead between various government agencies--what's the point in going through the fed?

And as pointed out in the article, Texas pays in a lot more than it receives (no doubt politics coming into play), why shouldn't states just keep and maintain their own roads and infrastructures?
