WASHINGTON — House Republicans are proposing to let some schools opt out of healthier school lunch and breakfast programs if they are losing money.

A GOP spending bill for agriculture and food programs released Monday would allow schools to apply for waivers if they have a net loss on school food programs for six months in a row.

Championed by first lady Michelle Obama, the new standards have been phased in over the last two school years, with more changes coming in 2014. The rules set fat, calorie, sugar and sodium limits on foods in the lunch line and beyond.

The first lady was holding a call to rally supporters of the healthier food rules Monday as a House subcommittee is expected to consider the bill on Tuesday.

What about letting them opt out if the lunches are making the kids sick?

The government guidelines are anything but healthy. They are designed to make money for the big agricultural companies now, and the big pharmaceutical companies later.

They’ll just have to make do with the currently available unhealthy school lunches and breakfasts...

How about letting the states completely opt out of Fed interference in their education systems?

Dear AP, It’s “Healthful” Lunch, not “Healthy”.

Please continue.

Or, opting out if more than 50% of the “healthy” food ends up in the garbage.

Or, best of all, opting out because the federal government is not constitutionally empowered to be involved in our schools in any way.

"Oh dear Lord, what about all the STARVING children!!"

They are the ones throwing away all the "healthy" foods they don't like.

I also hate that kids gravitate to junk foods. I guess that’s why they’re kids. It’s what they do!

What I hate even more is visiting my grand kids for one of those periodic grandparents lunch dates and seeing the garbage cans FILL TO THE TOP with thrown out fruits and veggies kids in Third World counties would slit throats to get their hands on.

The expense is, of course, another factor.

I suspect it’s profligate WASTE like that that has most of the rest of the world hating us.

Cant they make the lunches mandatory like Obamacare is?

6 million complied with a mandatory law, is that success or what?
