I don't know if that's true, but it actually wouldn't have been a bad idea.
When I left VN in '68, I stayed on Okinawa for 5 days to (supposedly) "get your uniforms squared away."
In fact, it was to allow a short time of decompression from combat.
Would be interesting to see a study of the frequency of crimes committed by returning vets over the last 100 years.

Would be interesting to see a study of the frequency of crimes committed by returning vets over the last 100 years. I think you'd have to compensate for the increasing illegalization of everything — as a current-issue
example, marijuana was completely legal [IIRC] in the `20s and wouldn't have warranted any mention, but today it would be a crime and go in some sort of record — that in itself would skew the by-the-numbers look of things.
