A Chinese national was killed and 10 others were feared kidnapped after an overnight attack in northern Cameroon believed to have been carried out by Boko Haram militants from Nigeria, officials said on Saturday.
"Boko Haram Islamists attacked a camp (of road workers). A Chinese was killed. Ten Chinese cannot be found since the attack. We think they have probably been kidnapped," a local police chief said on condition of anonymity.
The cross-border attack comes as Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan arrived in Paris Saturday to attend an international summit on Nigerian security, aimed at forging a strategy against the Islamist group.
Nigeria feels that Cameroon is not doing enough, said FRANCE 24s Leela Jacinto, reporting from the summit.
A source close to the Chinese embassy in Yaounde spoke of 10 missing and one wounded but would not confirm or deny whether one Chinese worker had been killed.
"Cameroonian soldiers retaliated and the fighting lasted until 3:00am (0200 GMT)," the officer said.
"The Boko Haram militants were heavily armed, they came in five vehicles," an official in Waza told the Agence France-Presse news agency on condition of anonymity.
He said the camp where the Chinese road workers stayed was usually guarded by soldiers from Cameroon's elite Rapid Intervention Battalion.
"Their numbers were thinner these past few days because many of them had gone down to Yaounde" for the traditional military parade marking National Day on May 20, the official said.
The police officer said the militants also attacked the police post in Waza overnight and raided its armoury.

Now, they’ve done it. The Chinese are not self-deluding fools, led by a hidden Muslim, who’s secretly backing Islamic terrorists.
I expect the Chinese will provide a generous ransom payment for their personnel, as they have done in the past:
A helicopter dropped a $4 million ransom payment on Sunday on to the deck of a Chinese coal ship hijacked by Somali pirates in mid-October, a pirate source on board the vessel said.
The De Xin Hai and its 25 crew were carrying about 76,000 tons of coal from South Africa to Mundra in India when it was seized in an audacious attack by the gunmen some 700 miles east of the Horn of Africa.
As soon as the crew is released look for the Chinese to sink the ship. Well, whether the crew is released or not.
Has Michelle sent a # plea yet?
Pray America wakes up
Correction: Boko Haram represent the Democrats that fund, protect, hide and live thru them.
Chinese M-F'ers had it coming to their azz.
I expected the Chinese to send in special forces.
How many of these bastards are there, does anyone know? I was under the impression that there weren’t that many, they aren’t well trained or led, and it shouldn’t be hard to wipe them out.
Pure cost benefit. They want their people back, but the cost of mounting an operation is non-trivial. There is also the political cost of failure. China's system is a lot like Republican Rome - while ordinary people (i.e. plebeians) don't get a vote, party cadres (i.e. patricians) certainly do. A leadership faction that loses credibility - and since Mao's death, China's top leaders have been principally leaders of one of many factions - is one that risks being forced out of power by rival factions. Since Mao left this mortal coil, not one of China's leaders has had the unquestioned god-like power still wielded in North Korea by the Kim dynasty.
That’s a good question. If they were Tea Party supporters, the gov’t would know everything about them, how many, etc.
Unlike Dear Leader the Chinese do not mess around and send clear and explicit messages not to mess around with their interests......
It would give me a lot of amusement if the Chinese were to dispatch a brigade of hard core killers to downright traumatize Boko Haram. Think of it as a field training exercise, and good practice.
If they could keep it discreet, all the better. Like say, 10,000 Boko Haram never existed.
The interesting thing here is that you obviously can't find labor skilled enough to do even something as basic as road work in Africa.
My guess is it is probably cheaper for the Chinese to have an all Chinese operation.
OK, a valid point perhaps. But wouldn’t the local government want to put their own people to work? (Toyota builds cars in the US, but they don’t ship over Japanese to do the work other than few managers.)
Uh Oh....The Chinese are going to do more than just a hashtag.
