US jobless claims decline to lowest level in 7 years: Dropped by 24,000 to 297,000 week ended May 10

The fewest Americans in seven years filed applications for unemployment benefits last week as the labour market continued to improve.

Jobless claims dropped by 24,000 to 297,000 in the week ended 10 May, less than any economist projected in a Bloomberg survey and the least since May 2007, figures from the labour department showed on Thursday in Washington. The median estimate of 49 economists surveyed was 320,000.

Firings have been slowing, setting the stage for continued growth in employment and wages. While payrolls rebounded in April after the holidays and a weather-induced soft patch earlier in the year, many companies are proceeding with caution until they see a sustained pickup in consumer spending, which accounts for about 70% of the economy.

The labour market continues to improve after some funkiness associated with the holidays, Brian Jones, senior US economist at Societe General in New York, said before the report. The economy’s generally getting better.

Economists’ estimates in the Bloomberg survey ranged from 303,000 to 330,000. The prior week’s reading was revised to 321,000 from an originally reported 319,000. No states were estimated last week and there was nothing unusual in the data, a labour department spokesman said as the figures were released to the press.

Baloney.

We need millions of re-hires just to get back to where we have been.

These numbers are currently bunk.

The number of jobless claims would have been higher, but inclement weather prevented many from being able to report their unemployment status.

“Firings have been slowing, setting the stage for continued growth in employment and wages.”

The jokes write themselves.

Setting the stage? The stage has been set so long, the footlights are burning out.

Wow, isn’t it amazing how these rosy-looking jobless claim numbers just so happen to be coming in following the horrible GDP “growth” last quarter and right as the midterm election season is gearing up and projecting a tsunami to hit the Democrats in November?? I mean, what a REMARKABLE coincidence! </sarc>

This is one of my favorite versions, even if I don’t like the singer...

297,000 is good news nowadays. I expect when everybody quits looking and new claims drop to zero because everybody is on the teat, Obozo will declare a national holiday.
You think these experts will ever figure out that when companies have trimmed to the bone claims will necessarily drop also? That aint good news but I am sure they will be celebrating in D.C. for a job well done.

Eligibility to receive unemployment has been max-ed out by so many there is no use in filing an application.

Not going to file an application if your last job did not make you eligible to receive unemployment compensation.

These numbers are absolutely false just like the rate of inflation numbers are phony. Both are manipulated to fit the political needs of the White House and the Democrats. They are all liars.

When we choose a candidate for any political office, we cannot always expect that person to be the most intelligent person on the planet. Nor can or should we expect that person to be the most gifted public speaker in the world. Nor should we expect that person to be the best-looking person. This list of characteristics could go on and on.

But there is one trait that we should always expect and never compromise, and that is integrity. The ability to always be honest no matter the consequences. Our democracy and our legal system demand it if either is to survive.

The current administration has been the most dishonest administration in our short history. Obama has operated the White House according to his training in Chicago. He will not change. The media is aiding and abetting him, and they are just as dishonest as he is.

Unless we the people demand integrity, our democracy is doomed. Samuel Adams said, “Our constitution was made for a moral and religious people, it is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

“The prior week’s reading was revised to 321,000 from an originally reported 319,000. No “

For every single week Zero has been in office these numbers are revised up and said to be “unexpected”. Every single week. The idiot is an incompetent communist propagandist.

Wait for the upward correction.

Not so fast.. Wait for a new method to estimate how we report the number, to make it look even better.. Ha!
