Aussie rules: Australia lays off 16,500 government workers, cuts entitlement programs
New York Post ^ | 05/14/2014

When Bill de Blasio released his budget for New York last Thursday, he made clear his approach for the next few years: more government, more spending and more borrowing against tomorrow to pay for today.

Meanwhile in Australia, the new Tony Abbott government has taken the opposite approach. Treasurer Joe Hockey’s budget is based on the idea that governments, like families, need to live within their means. As he put it Wednesday: “The days of borrow and spend must come to an end.”

In practical terms, that means layoffs for 16,500 government workers. It means cuts in entitlements, cuts in welfare, new fees on visits to the doctor’s office, slashed subsidies to businesses and a 2 percent surcharge tax on those earning more than $168,000 a year.

It’s all necessary, the treasurer says, to make up for the spending sprees of previous governments.

The treasurer and the prime minister recognize some of these measures will mean more pain for Australians already struggling to make ends meet.

“Australia lays off 16,500 government workers, cuts entitlement programs”

I had a job opportunity in Australia in the 1970’s that probably would have lead to me moving there permanently. Boy was I smart to stay here, where our government really has its stuff together!

Heard from down under (Australia) this morning and the new budget also includes a large tax increase. Person spoke with said heck is breaking loose with layoffs and the layoffs are not only in the government but private companies.

From information gathered this a.m., this figure is much lower than shown.

Wonder if this is the beginning of the worldwide crash everybody (Faber & those like minded) have been talking about?
The dead banker body count comes to mind as well.

Yep, and it's heading our way. One reason for the continued slow Obama recession is that taxpayer's are already paying a price for BIG government gone haywire.

The same is going to happen here in the USA, but much worse. You can not continue to have a larger and larger number of takers depending on a smaller and smaller number of producers. Twenty million government employees of all types, Federal, State, County, Local including teachers, janitors, librarians, police etc.. It will eventually be cut in half. No question about it. There is going to be a lot of gnashing of teeth, many will die but at least the gays will have homosexual marriage (sarc).

I heard that dick hd from Nevada say thee are 6500 senate employees. Now I know nothing about the inner runnings of the senate, but I must wonder if 6500 aren’t too many. I know, research, communications, spin master, I’ve no idea what all. I think maybe those senators are making themselves too important. How much do the gofers, et all, make?

I heard that dick hd from Nevada say thee are 6500 senate employees.

So that is 65 employees per senator. IMHO that is a bit much.

Senators have offices and staffs spread all over the state they represent, at least in our part of the world. IMO, each Senator should have no more than three employees in their DC office, if they are the Majority leader, add one more. Most of their stuff should be handled at the local level, particularly with the ability to communicate electronically.

Of course I also think they should be in DC only January-March and July-September and have their pay cut in half. Way too much time and money wasted and they need to be close to their constituents, not in DC.
