Russia

Gazprom still untouched but economic measures target those seen as close to President Vladimir Putin

The economic sanctions that Western nations and Japan have brought against Russia over Ukraine have targeted people and businesses, with travel bans and asset freezes hitting individuals who are considered to be close financially or politically to Russian President Vladimir Putin.World leaders have also dangled the prospect of harsher actions in economically sensitive areas such as energy if Russia disrupts elections to choose a successor to ousted Ukranian President Victor Yanukovych on May 25.

Sanctions increased, but nothing on Gazprom.
Seems counterproductive to me.

If Russian troops are to be kept within Russia's current boundaries, the EU and Ukraine must sustain some costs. Ukraine must fight and the EU must take some economic hits to levy real sanctions on Russia. Uncle Sam should not have to incur all the costs. If their plan is for the US to do so, I suspect they will be very disappointed. Obama's program involves large-scale domestic, not international spending.

And we’re the ones who suffer. Sure is nice Hunter Biden was named to be director of the Ukraine gas company yesterday.

Let the EU incur all the costs. No reason for us to spend any money.

The numbers make it clear why..... “Russia is the EU’s third-biggest trading partner, after the U.S. and China;.... in 2012, bilateral EU-Russian trade amounted to almost $370 billion..... The same year, U.S. trade with Russia amounted to just $26 billion.”

Europe isn’t going to sacrifice it’s main supplier. Besides this Gazsproms gas industry covers more than just gas...it has a wide swath of other companies and corporations Internationally..they are everywhere. From Investments to other energy companies, banks, to media ownership etc. etc. Not to mention a host of subsidiaries it has on it’s website...and that’s not counting those unknown or hidden.

Well Gazprom basically ‘IS’ the Russian Government...everything pretty much runs with the course it takes...and Putin himself makes many of the decisions concerning the large projects etc....

We all know oil and gas are at the heart of all the political issues , as well as other resources.

For over a month Kiev denied cutting off water supply to Crimea....recently then Putin said no gas without paying for it up front....he had warned of this but Kiev Gov. (US) went ahead anyway and shut Crimea down....

They could no longer deny it once the satellite photos revealed the truth....this photo was a land photo but even with this and others it was still denied. Now they are saying they'll release the water but I have not heard it's been done as of date.
