ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) – Facebook and other social media websites help billions of people express themselves for the world to see, but these online platforms have now taken on a deeper meaning – people are using it to define themselves.

New research published in the journal Social Influence analyzes how Facebook communication has affected people’s feelings of their own social value and self-esteem. The study finds that the more Facebook likes and comments that a person receives, the more likely they are to feel positive about themselves. On the other hand, the fewer likes and comments responding to a person’s status reflected feelings of loneliness and low self-worth.

In the first part of the Facebook study, “Threats to Belonging on Facebook: lurking and ostracism,” conducted among 79 undergraduate students from the University of Queensland, participants were either allowed or not allowed to share information on Facebook for 48 hours. Those who were not allowed to share information showed “lower levels of belonging and meaningful existence,” write the researchers, noting that simply a lack of presence on Facebook had a negative effect on the students’ personal well-being.

If you are using Facebook to "define" yourself, then you fit the definition of loser.

Too many people want to be part of the news, it started with the Diana funeral, now it’s facebook with people shouting out their every move, sheesh. When do they have time to actually accomplish anything.

I don’t belong to Facebook or Twitter or whatever. I live in splendid isolation from social media.

Intuitively, I’ve detested the very idea of Facebook from its inception. Hundreds of reasons to avoid it. When I watched my ex bf posting one day, I decided to break up with him. I had no idea he was so dumb, but he posted banal, idiotic, meaningless junk to “friends” who were doing the same for extended periods of time. HO HUM.

He could have been HERE saying meaningful stuff after actually doing some research.

P.S. I do NOT miss him.

Most burglars 5 to 1 say they are financially enriched by people that say they are going to go away and leave their house unintended for two week.

It is very difficult to get the fact over to atheists & pagans that God exists whether they think so or not

We have to remember that the enemy also exists. And when we allow them to take God out of our institutions we allow no protection rom it

These things, black masses are bound to happen

When we become strong and push back, bringing God back in, it will be better for the country we’re charged with taking care of

Their going to hell, a forever deal, is just not good enough. It won’t restore our country

They can’t, though they would, come back from hell and say they were wrong

Some people have been to hell and back and they’ve told us what it is, what it’s like

We know it

The Eucharistic procession a good way to go on these things Someone said it should happen regularly not just on a threat

The fact that most Catholics don’t accept that the Eucharist is really Jesus should say a lot about what’s going on here

Any of them who doubt it should read a true account of what happened here

I don’t think so.

The very first time I heard about it I called it a government monitored, if not government controlled, personal information mining operation.

I have neither seen nor heard anything since that day which would lead me to alter that description, apart from adding the word ‘vapid’ somewhere in it.
