It goes back way before 9/11. In the 50s through 80s, the Left was adamant that all speech, no matter how vile (and they were inventing new types of vile), had to be protected.

Any curb, however slight, was denounced as the first step on the slippery slope. They were insistent that banning such things as rape how-to guides would end in curtailing free political speech.

Now that they have they control the culture, they are still OK with things that are vile, but they are insistent on banning free political speech.

The Left always had and will always have the heart of a totalitarian.
