On Tuesday, Adam Silver forcefully announced that his sport would not countenance a hateful racist. He banned Clippers owner Donald Sterling from the league for life and will urge the board of governors to exercise its authority to force a sale of the team. For Sterling to finally get his comeuppance, to feel the wrath of public opprobrium, and to lose his prime asset seems just. For the NBA, which was engaged in a decades-long battle with its longest-tenured, and worst, owner, this was a perfect opportunity to act swiftly and harshly.

For what it’s worth, Slate tends to be a liberal site. For them to question forcing Sterling out of the NBA is interesting. While nobody will defend Sterling making such comments, there is a bigger issue which has been lost in the uproar. And that issue is whether it is right to force someone out of a business for saying something which is not politically correct.
Sterling is a vile racist?
He didn’t deprive anyone of a paycheck because of their race, he didn’t fire anyone because of their race, he has not enslaved anyone because of their race, he has not engaged in slave trade.
Yet, there is no accounting for the illegal taping, no accounting for the behaviour of those who were having affairs with his “girlfriend”, no accounting for the fact that he did not want to be humiliated by the presence of those who were blatantly carrying on those affairs.
So, that makes him a vile racist according to that commissar-looking spokesman for the NBA who passed judgement and levied fines and penalties.
Just saying.
IMHO
“commissar-looking spokesman” Silver’s got something going on other than his power trip. He was really thrilled when the NBA player came out. How long before he starts fining players over gay slurs?
We have the same opinion. He is not my kind of guy, if I knew him I would probably avoid him BUT ...... he was in his own home and it was a private conversation, or so he thought.
Yesterday the NAAlCP demanded assurances that this wouldn’t happen again.
Of course, the only way to assure that some white owner doesn’t say something offensive to the NAAlCP is to disallow all white ownership of teams...
which the NAAlCP would be fine with, I bet.
In America today, someone is being divested of property for words spoken in a private conversation.
Chew on that.
You are so correct. Americans have a very narrow world view and no idea what racism and ethnic conflict elsewhere is about. We have our headphones on, and listen only to one song, over and over again.
I’m kinda shocked, but that was a pretty straight up piece, especially coming from Slate. Wonder how it got by the editors.
There is nothing worse in our society that being accused of being a racist. Nothing. Lets say Donald Sterling had taken a machine gun, walked out in clear daylight with dozens of witnesses, and mowed down scores of people.
Do you think the NBA would have moved this fast in such an instance? Nope. They’d still be wringing their hands, and talking about “due process.”
I know a woman from China, who went through their extreme-Marxist "Cultural Revolution." Among her many stories, one I remember was that she was ratted-out by a neighbor, and taken to the police station because she secretly owned a pair of silk stockings.
Create the right conditions, and over time, the same "fever" could occur here.
Yes
All the PC people are all climbing over each other to show how much and how hard they can condemn an 80 year old man. But he’s white so it’s ok.

God help me if my private conversations ever leak out. I’d be tarred, feathered and run out of town on a rail.
Exactly. If they succeed. I got a feeling Sterling’s gonna tell em to put it where the Sun dont shine.
Exactly. It’s “PC cleansing”
He is a vile racist. And he deprived people of color of the fair right to live in his buildings.
Meanwhile, Spike Lee, Mr. I seriously wanted to pick up a gun and shoot whites. The only way to resolve matters is by bloodshed., gets the NBA to give him his own show on NBA Radio.
Is Democrat Representative Bennie Thompson a vile racist for refering to Justice Clarence Thomas an “Uncle Tom”.
There is nothing more vile than demeaning and degrading someone by way of unspeakablly racist comments because he doesn’t come from the same political philosophy.
IMHO
