On Claiming ACA Victory

Posted on 04/28/2014 10:22:06 AM PDT by jda

On April 18, the President claimed "this thing is working", that "it’s well past time to move on as a country and refocus our energy on the issues that the American people are most concerned about" and that "the repeal debate is and should be over".

Is the victory lap a bit premature?

On April 18, the President claimed victory regarding his signature legislation, the Affordable Care Act (aka ObamaCare). The fact that 8 million people have "signed up" was his excuse to assert that "this thing is working", that "it’s well past time to move on as a country and refocus our energy on the issues that the American people are most concerned about" and that "the repeal debate is and should be over".

But, the end zone victory celebration is kind of like claiming victory after scoring the first field goal, even though there are still 14 minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Before agreeing that ObamaCare is (in total) working, let's get little less propaganda and a few more facts, such as:

- How many people have lost their doctor because of Obamacare (remember, "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor - period!")?
- How many people lost healthcare because of Obamacare (remember, "if you like your healthcare, you can keep your healthcare - period!")?
- How many of those enrolled were newly eligible for and enrolled in Medicaid?
- How many of the remaining have enrolled in Obamacare?
- How many have paid?
- What are the demographics of those who have enrolled in Medicaid and Obamacare?
- How many are eligible for a subsidy?
- What is the total amount of subsidies?
- What is the total amount to be paid by paying customers?

- How many people were uninsured before Obamacare?
- How many of those were newly eligible for and enrolled in Medicaid?
- How many of the remaining have enrolled in Obamacare?
- How many have paid?
- What are the demographics of those who have enrolled in Medicaid and Obamacare?
- How many are eligible for a subsidy?
- What is the total amount of subsidies?
- What is the total amount to be paid by paying customers?

Answers to these questions will provide answers to the following:

- How many are still uninsured (this was the purpose of Obamacare)?
- What is the average cost of Obamacare versus the cost before (this was also a major selling point)?
- What will be the total cost of subsidies?
- How much of the subsidies will be covered by poremiums from paying customers?
- Where will the money for any deficit come from?
- What is the average deductible versus before (another major selling point was that people were just an illness away from bankruptcy - that may not have changed and, in fact, may be a greater risk now because of the high deductibles)?

When the facts match the selling points, then the victory dances can begin.

If ACA were truly a success, they would want to stay on the subject of the new and improved health care law. That they want to move on, is a sign that they want to delay the issue until after the midterms or longer.

Did it ever enter Mr. Obama’s mind that one of the issues the people are most concerned about are his claim that “this thing is working”? You can’t just start dismissing issues & “moving on” until the issues are actually settled.

Notice he didn't fly to a Navy carrier to make his announcement. No statutes were pulled down. And we won't find him hiding in a hole in the ground.

This is the kind of thinking and rhetoric that ensured his place in the university law school hierarchy as a lecturer and not a professor.
