Immigration reform vote in House looks inevitable

Speaker John Boehner has told donors and industry groups that the Republican House is going to take up immigration reform before the November election.

Not. Kidding.

Wall Street Journal:

Many lawmakers and activists have assumed the issue was off the table in an election year. But Mr. Boehner said at a Las Vegas fundraiser last month he was "hellbent on getting this done this year," according to two people in the room.

A spokesman for Mr. Boehner didn't dispute the account but said no action is possible until President Barack Obama proves himself a trustworthy partner to Republicans.

Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R., Va.), chairman of the HouseJudiciary Committee, delivered an upbeat message about legislative prospects during a recent trip to Silicon Valley, said Carl Guardino, chief executive of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, who hosted his visit.

He said Mr. Goodlatte told him action in 2014 was "entirely possible," likely in the form of votes this summer on five to seven immigration bills. A spokeswoman for Mr. Goodlatte declined to comment on the exchange.

Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R., Fla.) also is drafting legislation that would give qualifying undocumented immigrants legal status and the chance to apply for citizenship through existing channels. The bill includes border-security measures and an effort to clear the backlog of applications for permanent legal status, known as green cards.

Not even Boner is dumb enough to believe that will ever happen. No, he's just waiting until the money is in the bank.

Las Vegas fundraiser? What's next? Chicago?

I think the Republic is lost and it won’t be won back at the ballot box.

Every month or so this crap comes out again. I don’t think anything else will happen in this congress. The Senate bill is a sure loser.

The GOP will not take the senate and could possibly lose the house
if the GOP house passes amnesty.

“Every month or so this crap comes out again. I don’t think anything else will happen in this congress.”

Yes, we’ve gotten through another month without a vote in the House, and we’re one month closer to the election. But these people are insidious! And Rebecca Talent, John McCain’s aide who is now working for Boehner is no doubt behind whatever timing strategy they have planned, after the primaries but before July 4th, after the summer recess but before the elections, or after the elections and before the end of the congress.

Idiots. A similar problem occurred for the 2006 election. Bush was out hispandering for amnesty, which added to the woes the ‘right’ felt and they didn't show up for the election.

Priority #1- Stop immigration reform that will flood this country with over 30 million legal immigrants over the next decade and double the number of guest workers to 1.4 million a year. If that happens, the other priorities are meaningless. And if the Reps do immigration reform prior to the midterms, then the other three priorities you listed for November will be unobtainable and/or meaningless.

I have thought that for years. If you are up to it there is a new battle to be fought every single day.....against Republicans and Democrats. I simply got tired of being outraged.

Now, there is reform, and there is reform.

“Amnesty” is not a constructive reform. Not for the persons declared s “illegal”, not for America, and certainly not for Republicans. Losing issue, especially when presented to all those immigrants that came in the “right” way, waiting in line, going through all the background checks, and paid all the fees. The legal immigrants that came to America with intent of becoming Americans themselves, those are the people who have helped make America what it was for over 200 years.

Now actually reforming the immigration code, so that those who are admitted on a legal basis to the US to become citizens, to include persons beneficial to the economic opportunities that prevail in the US (well, they USED to count, and could again), are given the priority they deserve, is a worthy goal. But apparently one that is not even being discussed at the moment.

People who enter the US, for whatever reason, and do not intend to become citizens (and there are WAY more of these than the “amnesty” people claim) must be carefully tracked, and should be required to report any and all movements while within the US. The least infraction of legal requirements for continued residency in the US is sufficient for immediate deportation, not necessarily to their home country, but certainly, elsewhere.

Anybody hitching their wagon to the Republicans needs to get off the Ambien. America is about to burn. We won’t make it to November. Valery Jarrett told us in 2012 there won’t be any more elections to worry about.

Bonehead should learn to say things like: “Until the Obamacare crisis has been put behind us, all other legislation will be put on hold.” He could use statements like, “Obamacare is economic terrorism,” and he could throw in heart grabbers like, “Obamacare is hurting our children, killing our grandparents, and bankrupting us.”

Do anything but get caught in the amnesty trap.
