The apparent murder of a Chinese-American man, along with three family members, at his home in Houston, Texas, this January was recently said by an established overseas Chinese newspaper to have some connection to the former Chinese security official Zhou Yongkang, who is at the center of an intense corruption investigation.

I had speculated that some of the natural resource deals in African countries were more a way for Chinese officials to rip off the Chinese government rather than sweetheart deals for China. They were signing unprofitable deals not because they made financial sense, but because it provided a way to milk China's state coffers. Western firms had passed on them because the terms were simply too onerous. The news coverage about China "exploiting" Africa is just farcical - it's the Chinese who are being taken to the cleaners, with the connivance of light-fingered Chinese officials padding invoices and contracts.

They are all corrupt. The current leader's family is reputed to be worth hundreds of millions. Everyone up and down the line gets a slice in order to keep his mouth shut. Anyone who doesn't take a piece of the action is hounded out or dismissed on some flimsy pretext. A possibility is that the guy who was killed with his family was applying for refugee (and witness protection) status stateside in exchange for telling all, and the Chinese state security apparatus intercepted his phone calls and/or e-mail.
