The Weekly Standard really has it out for Jones. I’d think he was in trouble, but I remember them pushing a GOP primary challenger, veteran Joe McLaughlin, against Jones back in 2008, and Jones won easily by double-digits.
The challenger hurt himself badly by going on the Laura Ingraham Show because she is against trade agreements, amnesty and more war.
Maybe she could trick Bentivolio’s challenger into going on the show.
Ingraham asked him if he was closer to Lindsey Graham or Jeff Sessions. She explained the positions of both. Then he said Jeff Sesssions.
I wish she had not given him a description. I guess working for Bush he must know who Lindsey and Jeff are. He didn’t immediately answers who was more like.
He eventually said he “didn’t want crops rotting in the fields.”
Mrs. Jesse Helms has a radio ad going for Representative Jones...she has more clout than the Weekly Standard here in Eastern NC!
His district (the 3rd) is the location of three major military installations - Camp Lejeune MCB, New River Air Station, and Seymour Johnson AFB. He was an initial supporter of the Iraq war, but later became a vocal critic of it. I have lived in Jacksonville, NC, most of my life. It is home to Camp Lejeune and thousands of Marines. Although I am not directly connected to the Corps, I have many friends, coworkers, and students that are and they have taught me that in order to truly support them you must support their mission because to accomplish their mission is their primary objective and the reason for which they would sacrifice their very life. I know that Walter Jones was not critical of the war due to purely political reasons as the Democrats were, but I do not agree with his voicing that opinion while so many members of the military were in still in harm's way.
