See all the red in western AR on your Federal land map? Do you know what most was used for? Nuclear silos.
I grew up in the area on the map just north of the AR where we could drive the dirt backroads and come across lots of cleared, heavily fenced land (barb wire, electrified, etc.) around some small building with a transmission tower about 50 feet high. They were labeled “Private Property” and we were told they were phone towers.
Nope. Nuclear silos. I believe they are all gone now.

Everything east of that got some pretty high doses.
Going into some of these areas, there are massive craters and areas where the earth heaved and collapsed...They can clearly be seen today...It resembles the lunar surface.
