Florida Rep. Thurston Failed to Disclose Gambling Company Donations

Florida Rep. Perry Thurston failed to disclose $11,000 in donations from gambling interests when he blasted Gov. Rick Scott last week on gaming issues. A subsidiary of a Malaysian-based casino company donated the money to a political action committee listing Thurston as its sole “associated legislator.”

Thurston, a Democratic candidate for Florida Attorney General, issued a scathing press release Thursday attacking Scott for failing to finalize a new gambling agreement with the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Scott and other Republican lawmakers have said a new agreement with the Seminoles must be completed before passing new gambling legislation that might allow new destination casinos in South Florida.

Thurston, however, failed to disclose in his press release that his Alliance for Progressive Legislation political action committee received $11,000 in February from Bayfront 2011 Development LLC. Bayfront is a subsidiary of the Genting Group, a Malaysian casino conglomerate seeking approval to build “destination gaming resorts” in Miami and Palm Beach.

Since Democrat Perry Thurston was elected to the Florida House of Representatives District 93 in 2006, an examination of his campaign finance records showed a pattern of expenditures to at least two anti-gay churches in Pompano Beach.

The Sun-Sentinel reported that the pastor of that church, Anthony Burrell, was active in the 2008 effort that added the ban on same-sex marriage in Florida. Another, arguably more disturbing donation, was made last year to Rev. O’Neal Dozier Ministries. That donation, however, was a mere $250, which paid for an ad celebrating the pastor’s anniversary and birthday.

Dozier is well-known for his anti-gay rhetoric. In January, liberal magazine Mother Jones reported that Dozier referred to homosexuality as "something so nasty and disgusting that it makes God want to vomit."

The House’s top Democrat said he did not vote on a much-anticipated bill offering in-state tuition to undocumented students because he was “out of place.”

When the vote was taken on the bill, HB 851, after lengthy debate, Minority Leader Perry Thurston, D-Fort Lauderdale, was off the House floor and records show he was a “no” vote.

“I was just out of place, I’m totally in support of that bill,” he said.

The extreme liberal Miami media has not reported on this story...because it shows a Democrat in bad light.

So this story may never get out of the conservative internet circles. :(

Oh, well, there you go...another reason this crook isn’t being reported on in Miami.

Race.
