I have a difficult time understanding how any individual would hang out with someone who couldn't figure out how to cut a gun barrel themselves.

More than simple barrel-cutting; as difficult as it is reputed to be, how did the "backward" Afghani tribesmen of decades past manage to cut rifling into their copies of the venerable Lee-Enfield rifles?
