Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird announced additional sanctions Saturday in response to the escalating tensions in Ukraine, accusing Russia of "violating its sovereignty and territorial integrity."

"We are imposing sanctions on two additional individuals and on a Crimean oil and gas company," said a statement released by Baird.

Also on Saturday, the White House announced U.S. Vice President Joe Biden will travel to Kyiv on April 22 to meet with government officials and civil society groups ahead of the Ukrainian presidential election in May.

None of which will change a single mind in Russia. Western sanctions that say we won’t do business with Crimea, its not hurting Russia in any significant way. Its not even inflicting real pain on the Crimean leadership who do not have bank accounts in the West.

Come on. Thompson’s is a serious commodity in the Ukraine. What will they possibly do without their waffle coating gem?

Canada has a very large Ukrainian populace going back to post WWII. They, like Polish, Latvian, Estonian, Hungarian immigrants to Canada from that era have been a positive factor contributing much to their adopted country.

I don't doubt that. Ukrainians are great people.

But, how does this have anything to do with the exports from Canada to Ukraine? What exactly does Canada export to this country that already has what Canada provides anyway....

They can get their oil and gas from other sources. Russia is their primary source. And they're a mere 900 miles from the middle east.

Canada *could* play a very important role in this ugly situation. They could announce that they're gonna increase their oil and gas production and channel that increased production to Europe, thus making Vlad Putin's open and disgusting threats of petroleum blackmail unimportant.

Right focus on greedy capitalist pigs led by a master at gamming the system which took over a dissarayed system upon the dismemberment of Russian resources to politicians and bureaucrats running it and left it to their control. Which has led to an oligarchy of both church and state. Too bad the Ukrainians aren’t portraying this invasion in that fashion or pointing out where Russian troops are concentrated are in or facing are areas where there are high yield shale oil fields in the Ukkraine.

Not gonna happen. Canada doesn't have enough output to provide petroleum to the U.S., China, the far east, and Europe at the same time. That could change in 5 to 10 years. By that time, Europe will probably get their oil from fields in the Middle East while Canada focuses on U.S. consumption.

This still has nothing to do with the ridiculous over-hyped sanction news we're seeing here. Russia is basically a Eurasian version of Canada. And Europe knows this. They're sucking on the hind teet of Putin's regime and this ain't gonna change any time soon.

It’s great to see there’s at least one country’s leader in North America that has cajones.

"Canada imposes sanctions to punish Russia."

I'm not entirely sure the Russians will care...Or even notice.

I knew about Canada’s large Ukrainian immigrant population. It’s interesting that Ukrainians and those who immigrated from Ukraine want that country free, but that so many others - some here on FReeRepublic - seem to believe Ukraine is better off under Putin’s control. I wonder why that is.
