5 Potential House Primary Losers (McCain aide trying to take out anti-Boehner Rep)

snip

Incumbent: Rep. Walter B. Jones, R-N.C.

Primary: May 6

Challenger: Former Bush administration aide Taylor Griffin

This race pits Jones, a well-known but quirky figure in his district, against a former political consultant, Griffin, who boasts a network of savvy operative allies.

On Capitol Hill, Jones is best known for defying GOP leadership. For example, in 2013, he voted against Speaker John A. Boehner as his party’s leader and against the House GOP’s budget.

Some national Republicans are tired of Jones bucking the system and are rallying behind Griffin, his top opponent. And at least two well-funded conservative groups are working to make Jones the first incumbent to lose re-election this cycle. Ending Spending Action Fund has already spent more than $150,000 on ads attacking Jones’ “liberal” voting record — a significant buy in this district.

An eastern North Carolina native, Griffin served as crisis manager consultant for Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign before moving back to the Tar Heel State to challenge Jones. But while Griffin has strong connections in Washington, D.C., he is virtually unknown in this coastal district. That’s a problem for him in his quickly-approaching primary.

Jones 83% (Average) 75% (Heritage) 84% (ACU) 78% (CFG) 95% (FreedomWorks)

I wonder who would vote more conservative, Jones or Griffith? Somebody who voted against John Boehner or somebody who used to work for John McCain? Hmmmm?

Don’t let that fool you….Jones is bad news and is not a tea party guy by any means. Voted with Obama more than most Republicans. A 75 heritage and 84 ACU averge is awful for eastern NC.

Griffin is far more conservatvie than either McCain or any of the Bushes……he would be far more Tea Party. Jones is just an SOB contrarian….no one likes him, GOPe OR Tea Party types.

Ok. Thanks for the info. My suspicions are up with every one of these elections!

Your suspicions are well founded, this just so happens to be my district now, and I know the dynamics. Jones has no political soul - so while it may be encouraging to know he’s not liked by the estabs, it’s important to point out he’s not liked by the tea party insurgents either. He’s all over the board, no intellectual consistency to him, and just couches it in “hey look at me, no body likes me so this proves I’m doing the right thing.”

He isn’t…..not very often.

Why is the Repbulican Party in NC in such dire straits that they have to choose between someone “quirky” and an imported John McLame supporter? Perhaps it’s just as well they lose this seat to the Democrats and let more able states elect genuine conservatives.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Walter B. Jones Sr. (D) was the representative from the same area for years until his death. His son picked up the seat after switching parties, because the republicans had gained power in eastern NC. Another case of a family of career politicians.

Walter B. Jones Jr.....RINO

No, it is not just as well to lose the seat. The tactic of letting the dems win just to fire up the conservative base is a scam, completely foolish. It is akin to committing suicide to get even with someone; they might actually feel sadness, but you will be dead and won’t know it. Do your homework, choose the best of the available candidates, and fight to win.

I just about guarantee you Walter, for all of his "odd-ball" behavior, is not going to be defeated in the May primary.

His being on the outs with Boehner is virtually unknown, and so is the Speaker, in NC-3 - even the latest NC-3.

On the other hand, Walter Jones and Walter Jones, Jr. have name ID across the whole region and three generations.

It sounds like this young "consultant" was talked into hiring folks he thought were "friends" and talked into running against Walter (who is particularly disliked by the Speaker's cohort), and these "friends" of his, the young consultant's consultants, will get paid regardless of the outcome.

Freepers, we really MUST be praying for these primaries. While many of us can no longer financially do much to help, we can pray that against all odds, our Lord will bring a true “winner” through, a champion for the people and the US Constitution. Prayer does change things, so let’s not forget this.

Oh, good catch…I had forgotten that. For many years, eastern NC Democrats were way more conservative than most national Republicans - called “Jesse Crats” - for being bigtime Jesse Helms supporters - they were the forerunners of Reagan Democrats in a way.

But you’re right….it is a case of career politicians - like a NC edition of the Bidens or the Reids…..

Walter B. Jones Jr.....RINO

STFU!

He's one of the last conservatives we have. He dared oppose the Bushbots and neocons because he actually cares about the troops and America. Of course, the Roves and Kristols will destroy him. Sorry to see you side with those evil hacks.

It’s OK. I’m kind of out of the loop on Jr. since I changed my residency from NC to VA when I retired from the Navy back in 98. So I probably don’t know what the h3ll I’m talking about. I should be the one to apologize.
