Climate Change Takes Its Toll on Baby Deer in France
NBC News ^ | April 2, 2014 | BY JAMES ENG

Will a warming world eventually kill off roe deer in France?

That question is being raised in light of new research indicating that the animals are having a hard time adapting to climate change.

In a study published Tuesday in the open-access journal PLOS Biology, researchers tracked the births and subsequent survival of roe deer fawns in France's Champagne region.

They noted that spring vegetation on which the adult deer depend for food was starting to flourish two weeks earlier that it did nearly three decades ago, due to gradual warming. But although spring was arriving earlier, the animals' birth season stayed the same, failing to keep pace with the changing temperatures.

That is what happens where deer are not allowed to be hunted I would gladly shoot 4or five a year for you.

Because My family finds them to be very good eating.

But in a lot of places hunting restrictions do not allow it.

Stock up on lightbulbs. the U.S. government has banned lighbulbs because they say lightbulbs are causing global warming. global warming is a hoax that democrats created to grow government/socialism

Lights out for the incandescent light bulb as of Jan. 1, 2014

Obamacare just like the light bulb ban.

We are forced to buy something we don’t need at a higher price and get less performance than the legacy product.

It’s a BS article. If there was a climate causality involved deer would not thrive in warm climates -like FL.

So what if the spring flora comes out two weeks early? The does feed the fawns for the first several weeks. As long as there’s available vegetation for the does is all that matters. Now if spring was two weeks ~late~ that would matter since there would be less for the does to eat to support the fawns. Food available earlier for the does to feed the fawns only helps them.

Irrational liberal argument # 45,089,342,197. The article’s reasoning is BS.

The U.S. government banned lightbulbs and they are forcing us to buy Health Insurance . This is no longer a free country

My county allows controlled deer hunts using bows for a few days a year in hunting season but I think the state parks dont.

As long as the adults have enough food to eat throughout the year it should not make much difference, since babies suckle from the mother anyway.

Right. So if spring comes two weeks earlier, that means that mama deer gets two extra weeks of eating time to put on some fat reserves before giving birth and having to produce milk. It should INCREASE survival rates.

You people need to understand- the weather of the last 100 years is the only way the weather should ever be! If it varies as little as one degree we are all going to die! We are all going to freeze and/or burn to death! We will all drown in an endless sea next to a burning desert! There is no weather but the weather we find perfect right now! Anyone who disagrees will be imprisoned! You there! Stop using that air conditioner! Hate crime! Hate crime against Mother Earth!

Here in Wisconsin we just had the report from the DNR on the deer population after one of the coldest winters in history. And it, like all cold winters, was devastating for the deer. The number of deer killed from the cold was much greater than average. So much for the “truthfulness” of this garbage report.

We have warmed relative to the Little Ice Age (1550-1850), the end of which is the start of their time line for measuring warming. Considering the difficulties posed by that period, I find it amusing that liberals claim improved climate (more like the Medieval Climate Optimum) is a bad thing. It’s almost like liberals don’t like people and want us to go back to the Stone Age, with the high death rates that go with primitive living conditions. Almost.

Related to same problem I cite above, you cant have animal predators to deer running around neighborhoods that used to be woods.

Same problem with using guns to hunt them.

Here the county allows a few organized and scheduled deer hunts a season with bows when the kids are in schools.

Even with that we got whiners.

Here they Balkanized the county with the new neighbors in the new neighborhoods(all different nationalities) , and caused some flight to the new neighborhoods further West to avoid the crowding.

So now they can do anything they want, Balkanized communities don’t resist, they are too fractured and members stay with their own clique group with own language.
Their kids may cross lines but they usually are libs.

Libs call it ‘diversity’

I would love tell Thomas Sowell how development worked out.

Yeh GA is lousy with deer. They run through your front yard and down the streets. When the season limit is 14 whar can I say. :-)

Going through Central N.Y. last week, counted over two hundred deer off the side of the roads, some herds were twenty or more, in one place [a deserted house and barn] I stopped and counted 22 feeding around the house and they were within feet of the roadway. It was getting dusk and I slowed down after that. I would consider going back and hunting there but I am not sure about NY hunting laws.

Upstate NY is way overpopulated with Deer. We need to allow hunters to take many more and sell them to prisons to feed inmates and save taxpayers money.

From the report:

Overall, roe deer numbers in France are still increasing, just at a much slower pace. The worry is that the population will start to decline if climate change continues though the coming decades, Gaillard told The Verge.

So deer population is increasing but not at the same rate. And a "worry" now passes for a scientific conclusion.

I hope these people actually know something about deer populations, they're notorious for expanding and then collapsing ( See St Matthews island)

Also it's a well established fact that in the presence of increased CO2 plants grow at a much faster rate. So more forage gives the mothers less to eat?How on earth did they account for all the other variables. Did they look at predator populations to see what was happening to them ?

The Roe deer will adapt. Births will go down for a time, but over time the survivors will be the offspring of those who adapted best and as time goes on and such survivors dominate the Roe deer population the Roe deer birth rates will come back up - barring any other adverse conditions, such as shrinkage of habitat in response to growing human habitat - the MOST LIKELY CURRENT CAUSE of more Roe deer offspring surviving.
