American Jews need to understand a concept that can be expressed the four little words:

It. Can. Happen. Here.

On one hand I’m horrified at the growing anti-semetism, particularly on college campuses (I saw some in undergrad back in the 1990s). On the other hand I have the sober realization that most American Jews have been, if not outright enablers of this sort of thing at least blissfully ignorant of it.

The truth is that Christians have been doing most of the heavy lifting for the past couple decades when it comes to support for Israel while the Jewish community has been able to play free rider and toe the Liberal line. But the truth is that the first, best and most effective advocates for Israel and against anti semetism are ... Jews. Time for them to get off the bench and into the game.

Speaking as an American Jew, I get it. Sadly, most of my relatives have no clue. Like the German Jews several generations back, they are convinced that their secularism, their easy incorporation into the larger culture, and their lack of easily identified Jewish traits make another Holocaust impossible. Fools.

There was a statement by Benjamin Netanyahu when he was asked about the lessons of the Holocaust. He said, “Believe someone when they say they want to kill you.” I have enough of an arsenal to make it a rough day for anyone trying to capture me for the camps. I tell my son - who is only one-quarter Jewish - that he would be a target for any return to anti-Jewish pogroms. My sister, who is half-Jewish like me, thinks that it isn’t a problem for her since she goes to a nice liberal church in Asheville and doesn’t identify herself as Jewish. Like the German Jews before her, she could be in for a rude shock.

And you’re right. It is happening here right now. God help us.
