I read an article whose thesis was that contrary to the pride we have in our accomplishments as “modern humans” and our supposed civilization - people of the middle ages were actually the most peaceful and spiritual, in terms of the numbers of humans killing each other in wars, abortions, euthanasia, forced famines, genocides, etc...

By that score, the 20th century until today has been the worst.
