THE search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 is borne of tragedy, yet Australia finds itself at the centre of the most significant multinational peacetime operation it has known, far more meaningful than any joint military exercise, let alone any United Nations or APEC summit.
In diplomacy, all answers are known before the meeting starts. In military exercises, each nations moves are pre-planned. There is no script for this.
The grave search for MH370 has brought numerous disparate nations to Australias door, where it has the task of managing an unprecedented operation at the hostile edge of the world.
In doing so, we now act as the neutral guardian to the hopes and needs of two of the most important nations in the world: China and the USA.
It is a Malaysian-owned plane, and as they assemble a team to send to Perth to join the operation, their interests need to be managed carefully by Australia.
But the Boeing 777 that crashed eight hours after takeoff is American-made. Whether its catastrophic ending in the southern Indian Ocean was caused by malfunction or intervention by malevolent forces, the US needs to know, urgently.
Most of the 239 passengers and crew aboard were Chinese. For Beijing, domestically and internationally, much is at stake as the world gets a rare insight into its responses and reactions.

The good news is that Australia is doing the coordination in that neck of the woods, they are the only folks there with the competency and skill to get it done.
ABC Radio news just reported that a Chinese ship is in the vicinity and will pick up some of the debris in the ‘new’ search area within a few hours. Thus, they may have something definitive soon.
What if the Michael Hasting accident was just practice for taking over an airplane!?!?!
Lots of scary what ifs out there. That’s why we need the truth
This whole search reminds me of the comedy act where the guy is looking under the street light for the keys he lost in the alley because the light is better.
If the Malaysians are caught in some kind of fraud or deception as to the fate of MH370, the Chinese are gonna be furious.

Wonder which country will be the one to drop a wing and a couple seats that will miraculously be found.
They might be able to find any poisons if they recover any bodies. Some of the bodies from Air France Flight 447 were remarkable well preserved under water for 2 years (until they attempted to bring them to the surface).
I have yet to see proof that it crashed.
Three men, all pointing to Iran or another country.
And I think they know and all these press releases are just so much garbage to fill the airwaves.
Nobody has - that’s why they are still searching.
But knowing some of the ADF personnel involved in the search, I don’t believe they would be involved in any sort of cover up - not unless there was some compelling reason of national security that I cannot see any sign of believing exists.
When I was in the Navy, I certainly would not have done so, and would have spoken out if somebody tried to make me.
Because of the nature of the search, conspiracy theories surrounding this would require professional and honourable service people from a number of different countries to be involved. So I don’t think that’s likely.
It doesn’t mean the plane is in the Indian Ocean - I certainly would not rule out the possibility of error in analysing the data - it is based on circumstantial evidence, and logical reasoning based on assumptions. But if the data didn’t back up the reasons we’re searching there, a lot of the people searching would know that and would have said something by now.
