Why on earth would a university keep their football program D1? Why not just drop to Divisoin III..
Shep and Judge N just mentioned that if the unionization happens NW will drop division 1 football.
The universities need to stop awarding scholarships. They can stick it to the NLRB union thugs.
Offset their wages with the costs of tuition, room & board, meals, travel, uniforms, trainers and coaching.
I have mixed feelings on this. Unions, for the most part, are trouble. On the other hand, college sports (football and basketball, specifically) have become a farce. Once upon a time, college sports were supposed to be recreation for actual college students. And I’m sure that’s still true for crew, lacrosse, etc. and women’s sports. However, with multimillion dollar television contracts and millions at stake in ticket sales and merchandise, college football and basketball are now BIG BUSINESS. Simply to field teams in these revenue-generating sports, schools enroll thousands of young men who would otherwise have no business being a student on a college campus. When you come down to it, these kids are more like employees than students. Many of them are, frankly, incapable of functioning as students. This union thing is simply a nod to the reality of the situation.
What if is carried out further to any student receiving a scholarship? It looks to me like they are pushing for more gov’t employees. They already offered student loan forgiveness for working so many years in the public sector. Just like Michelle Obama urged young people to not pursue careers in (nasty, greedy) private business but to do good public work.
Here come the Pre-Game Negotiated Losses. It will be as predictable and sometimes as obvious as many Big Time Wrestling Events used to be. To join or not to join may not be an option.
1000%...i’m in the football business and have no love for unions but in many instances these kids are abused...they are lied to about injuries and often take the field with injuries when they should not play which kills their NFL chances...Nick Saban is the master of this (Josh Chapman, Barrett Jones, Jesse Williams to name a few players)...Jason Verrett, a potential 1st round cornerback from TCU was outwardly lied to by the coaching staff who told him he has a “shoulder sprain” when in fact they knew it was a torn labrum and he was threatening his NFL career...
Northwestern? look what they did to Corey Wooten...
Couldn’t lawsuits and jail time solve this without getting the commie labor unions involved?
Wooooo Hoooo. I’m no fan of unions, but I’ve been saying for years that the college football (and basketball) players should do this. The current situation is a joke.
employees = taking pay to play = professionals
Why is it a joke? A scholarship is easily worth $100,000 over the 4 or 5 years they are in school. If they are smart and graduate the degree could allow them to make a million dollars more over their lives than they would if they had no degree. How is that a joke? What a great opportunity it provides them.
If they are employees, then their scholarships can be considered taxable income.
Even though a steak lover may pay big bucks for filet mignon at a fine restaurant, that same steak has ZERO VALUE to a vegetarian. ZERO.
Although, you are right that it's not a joke.I should have said it's a racket - for coaches, athletic directors and NCAA flunkies to make a killing.
And just what do you suppose that is at Northwestern?
If I understand this ruling correctly, they are employees and it’s taxable income whether they unionize or not.
This guy just screwed every college scholarship athlete. Especially if the IRS can go back rewtroactively.
Why not just drop scholarships? If you want be treated as an employee of NW then we will pay you twenty bucks an hour and give you the reduced tuition bennies we give to other employees. Hope you don’t miss your $60K/years schollie. And by the way your shop steward called. He wants to know where your dues payment is.
Geez $240K over four years towards your college education isn’t pay enough?
Be careful with your facts. Chapman is making pretty good money playing for the Colts right now, and knew full well he had a leg injury and chose to finish out his senior season.
Is the nlrb unionized? It should be, if it isn’t. Something about “truth in packaging,” or “truth in advertizing.”
