Bacteria in the Gulf would eat the oil if they just left it alone.

Eventually, yes.

But much of it was recovered. It can be separated from the water, processed and used. It would also kill too much marine life before was consumed up. This is shallow water; not the massive water volume of a deep water oil spill.
