Top Republicans are hoping for a happy beginning to the next, 114th Congress, with the GOP taking control of the Senate and forcing President Obama on his heels for the last two years of his term.
But in the House, the clouds are already gathering over the first day of the next session, when the chamber votes to elect a Speaker.
My sense at the present time that the Speaker doesn't have the support of the conference, says South Carolina Republican Rep. Jeff Duncan about John Boehner. Another member of the House privately estimates that 40 Republican lawmakers would vote against Boehner on the floor and says I've seen a running total.
Believe me, they're not going to go through the national embarrassment -- all of the cameras are on the floor -- they're not going to go through that. A leader will emerge before that happens, the source adds.
The discussions behind closed doors, which have picked up dramatically in past months, are still at the early stages, and it's not clear whether Boehner will even come back. There are also still nine months left in 2014 an eternity in politics.
But based on interviews with a broad array of plugged-in Republicans over the last several weeks, it seems unlikely the transition into 2015 will pass through peacefully.
There are conversations being had, Duncan adds.
Majority Leader Eric Cantor has turned up the intensity of his outreach to members in preparation for the possibility Boehner retires but is facing new questions from the right about his conservative bona fides.

Nothing would make me break out into a Spring dance more than news that Boehner would be replaced as Speaker by a conservative.
“Majority Leader Eric Cantor has turned up the intensity of his outreach to members in preparation for the possibility Boehner retires”
Heaven help us if we go from Boehner to Cantor.
“but is facing new questions from the right about his conservative bona fides.”
That may well be the understatement of the day.

No they won't. IF they take control the GOP will continue expanding big government and stand by while Obama openly defies them and governs by executive order. The GOP will justify doing nothing because they'll say with only two years left its not worth fighting him. They'll just comfortably ride out the storm and we'll be stuck with the debris left in the aftermath of Obama's so-called "lame duck" period.
One thing we can be certain of: The GOP is nothing but bluster and appeasement. Its a hollow party that stands for NOTHING.
Gowdy will spend more time fighting the GOP-e than the president and his party of maniacs. Sad but true.
It’ll just be another RINO.
A difference that makes no difference is no difference.
“Believe me, they’re not going to go through the national embarrassment — all of the cameras are on the floor — they’re not going to go through that. A leader will emerge before that happens, the source adds.”
OMG,,are the Republicans in the House actually getting a clue????
Somebody pinch me,,I must be dreaming.
“Gowdy will spend more time fighting the GOP-e than the president and his party of maniacs”
I dunno. Gowdy is damn impressive. The GOP-e is used to the Boehners of the party. I think it would only take a couple of tangles with Gowdy for the GOP-e to go running with their tail between their legs looking for a softer target.
Gingrich fought his leadership for years, and when he finally had a majority of the caucus behind him, he created the Contract for America and was the driving force behind taking the house in 1994. Talk Radio helped, but without someone on the inside driving it, it would not have happened. We need a Gingrich for this era.
What they mean by that is that they are not going to have the fight over the speakership at the time of the vote for speaker. They are going to decide in caucus and then the vote will be unanimous in front of the cameras.
Anybody who thinks replacing Tammy Faye with Cantor is a change needs their head examined.
The only difference between the two is no smoking breaks or tanning salon visits.
:-) Snicker.
How does “Speaker Trey Gowdy” sound?
