"Communications" is a longtime euphemism in the Carter family for bowel movement, much as Jimmy speaking privately of "the fat bastard" actually signified his brother Billy and "my first & worst communication" was Miss Lillian's way of referring to Jimmy.

No doubt his communications are being monitored, if only by Jimmy himself, a practice he commenced with in the crib and has never forsaken, particularly given his interest in the many hybrids of peanut and their various, shall we say, outcomes.
