Obama imposes new sanctions on Russian officials, signs order authorizing broader measures

President Obama announced Thursday that he is imposing sanctions on additional senior Russian officials and others over the country's annexation of Crimea, warning that broader economic sanctions could be in store if Russia does not stand down.

The president, speaking on the South Lawn of the White House, voiced concern that Russian military positioning could point to "further incursions" into southern and eastern Ukraine. He also issued an executive order giving the U.S. authority to impose sanctions on "key sectors of the Russian economy."

"Obama, warning of more costs to come for the Kremlin if the situation worsens, said he also signed an executive order that would allow the U.S. to penalize key sectors of the Russian economy. Officials said Obama could act on that authority if Russian forces press into other areas of Ukraine, an escalation of the crisis in Crimea."

This is what seems to have the financial talking heads on Fox Business worried, although the market averages don't agree with them. Could Obama have found a way to hurt the Western economies while maintaining that he is protecting them from the Russian Bear?

NOTHING in your rationale justify a US declaration of war to Russia.

Did I say declaring war on Russia? Not sure that's called for nor wise at this point. I was talking about exploring a Congressional way to declare military action in a particular region to assist a sovereign, free country from invasion of a hostile aggressor country. Limited action and limited scope - kind of like the action Reagan took with Grenada. The citizens of Granada were saved from a hard-line Marxist coup and aggressor countries took note, backing off during the rest of Reagan's tenure.

This would obviously have more potential risk than tiny Grenada, but my point is, our hands are not necessarily tied becasue of Obama's Leftist double-minded catatonic state. But we would have to have the attitude that we were in it to win it, else you end up with a Vietnam-type stalemate. If we weren't prepared to win, we should stay out and let Putin have his way. But at some point, we should be ready to step in if necessary - Putin seems to have more plans. Also, watch out for these other countries who are going to be emboldened by Obama's double-minded weakness.

They can go to Cuba just as easily.

Cuba sucks. Why would anyone in their right mind choose to vacation there, with so many better alternatives?

Did Putin target just republicans...McCain and Boehner of course....but I haven’t yet seen the “List”.

IMO Putin knows all this is for show now.....looks like he’ll play for a time. I imagine this was part of the “deal” made long ago. Have to give ‘political’ food to the masses on both sides.

BTW Crimea Alert:

“The ‘commanders’ of 72 Ukranian military units, institutions, and ships of the Ukrainian Defence Ministry have joined with the Russian Armed Forces for further military service,” the Crimean government official said”.....

Also understand still much unrest in Ukraine among the people..and anger for cuts in social services to pay for defense....Did they not realize freedom costs or did they just imagine the world would bail them out completely?

Obama’s “ name and blame lists”” sanctions won’t make a difference because ....about a year ago a law had been passed in Russia ....No governments officials and members of parliament were allowed to have foreign accounts and own properties abroad...(at least not in their own names)...any there was surely transfered to China and elsewhere.

They have little control of their streets..and many fear going out as innocent people being reported roughed up and knifed. SAw some old ladies walking down the street with clubs to protect themselves.

.....”If we weren’t prepared to win, we should stay out and let Putin have his way”....

Well after Obama put our soldiers hands behind their back in Iraq and Aphganistan...I have no reason to believe Obama knows what military war or winning it is about.

Therefore no war, even remotely so under his watch..never!

There’s that, plus he and his handlers want America to be dismantled and weakened. It’s their specific goal - “Post American World”.

((((BO and his handlers want America to be dismantled and weakened. It’s their specific goal - “Post American World”.)))

Putin knows this all too well and has stated as much. He hates Obama. Won’t deal with him because he has a word to discribe Obama and those who voted for him...which he believes would take down this country if they were ever given political power to do so.

I don’t know if Putin “hates” Obama, but he sure doesn’t respect him.

No, Putin doesn’t hate Obama. If anything the emotion might be pity.

He has beaten Obama at every opportunity and rather than hate, he is enjoying showing Obama to be the fool he is.

Putin knows Obama is not America. Putin is and knows that he is doing America a favor by making it known to all the word that America has a damn fool for a President.

Just a matter of how one wants to use vocabulary I suspect. I prefer saying he hates him....however to hate someone really exhausts more energy then simply not respecting them..so you may be right.

Putin also knows a large portion of our country doesn’t respect Obama, and because of how our country runs knows nothing will change til the next election.... When our own “Oligarchs” put their money behind their chosen candidate.

OUR Government now is not that far from Russia’s Government....Both appeal as much to the masses to keep them in office, gives them a few crumbs off their tables, and operates behind the scenes of the false reality they project through their media’s to the masses.

He enjoyed Bush...over 67 oil/gas contracts with Putin when he visited..and why Putin was smiling from ear to ear so much.

Putin has said..”Whoever produces, prices, and distributes oil controls the power”.... Which is why Putin himself makes all the decisions concerning Russia’s oil. He IS Russia’s oil Czar....and uses it as a weapon because he’s built his Oil Empire to where we see it today.

He knew Bush knew that as well...so they could communicate and deal. He respected Bush because he wasn’t going to disturb the “pay out” he’d have from Bush by doing so. However Bush understood that as well.

Obama and Putin cannot communicate...they are diametrically opposed with no common interest. Besides, Obama is not the least skilled in handling Putin...he’s way over his head when he tries....for that matter pretty much everything else as well...as his administration.
