In the fall of 1945 there were elections in Yugoslavia and the Communists won 80% of the vote. A Yugoslav politician told the people at the US embassy that he thought the real support for the Communists was about 40%. The situation with yesterday's vote may be similar.

The Tartars seem to have boycotted the vote. They have a longer history in Crimea than the Russians. The Crimean Goths were there from at least the third century (if not earlier) and were still around speaking their Germanic language in the late 16th century but seem to have disappeared.

Yesterday's vote has about as much legitimacy as one of Napoleon's plebiscites.

Just before WWI, the director of the excavations of the ancient Greek city of Chersonesus, just outside Sevastopol, was a Russian German named Loeper whose family had apparently been resident in Russia for several generations, but when the war with Germany broke out he was removed from directing the excavations. One of his pet projects was to find evidence of the Crimean Goths but apparently he had no luck. He died either during WWI or during the Civil War which followed--at any event before Stalin was in control.

The Tatar/Tartar language is in the Turkic family, related to Turkish, Kirgiz, Kazakh, Uzbek, Turkmen, Bashkir, Yakut, and several lesser languages...it is not related to the Germanic languages.

Poles and Germans jointly invaded the newlyformed Czech state .There wasn’t any referendum held in the Sudentenland. After the Poles marched into the mountainous Zakopanie Czech region the Czech’s allowed the Nazi’s in per the famous white “peace in our time” paper to march in. Of the German speakers (some Amish) who were living in the region for hundreds of years. Many were loyal to the Czech regime and remnants of the Austro Hungarinan system. They paid the price after Hitler was defeated and evicted from the area resettling in what is todays Germany. They’re commonly refered today as the Sudentenland Deutch .

There wasn't any actual referendum held in Crimea either.

The Russians invaded and then held an after-the-fact pretend referendum.

What bothers me is the FR responses to these Uks postings. Such as “only Uks can own land” implying only Ukraininan speakers when it is citizens of Ukraine including Russian speakers. “ Even Americans can’t own property in Mexico. Actually if they joined the EU that restriction wouldn’t allow them to join but that restriction is exclusive to EU members .That would still include Russian citizens.

All those postings supporting Putin and the Ruskys come directly from the Kremlin including the Nazi comparisons.

The one about Sudentenland ignore the fact that the Czechs were sold out by Chamberlain and that the Poles invaded Czecheslovokia at the same time. What it demonstrates is that their propaganda like ours plays to the ignorance of the LIVs. Actually neither the Nazi “Ansluss” of Austria and the march into the Sudentenland were preceeded by any legal “plebicite” they simply marched in unopposed like they did in Norway. In that way the comparison is similiar. The only “referendum” Hitler ever held was for the Saar. And after WWII that region supported Hitler’s contention despite what revisonists wistfully assert. Putin learned from Hitler and those countrys which allowed it didn’t learn from history. They were reading from the same revisionist history book.

As far as these confiscation of bank accounts go. The Russians are right they’re a joke.
