The truth of the matter is we can’t do much of anything short of starting WWIII, ruining OUR economy and making enemies with the EU who will receive the brunt of any retaliation.

It can be done without starting World War III. Read up on how Ronald Reagan bankrupted the Soviet Union to help win the Cold War. He did it through energy policy.

The problem (okay, only one problem) with Obama is that he is incapable of seeing a picture that is bigger than his own ego. If you cross him, he goes after you personally.

But could we do the same today? We didn't have a 17 trillion dollar debt load in the 1980’s

+1.

If America had become a significant exporter of LNG a few years ago, Gazprom (also known as “Russia”) would be far less pathological today.

I cordially loathe McCain as much as the next FReeper, but Palin would have drilled, baby, drilled - and granted LNG export licenses.

When the world is full of pathological extraction economies, a strong Energy policy IS strong Foreign policy.

I disagree. The advantage we had back then was also technology. Via Clinton’s give-aways and educating/employing all the foreigners we have, that advantage has dwindled as well.
