“He added that Russian President Vladimir Putinhas “some law on his side” in Crimea because Russia held a lease on a naval base in the Crimean city of Sevastopol.”

Maybe I am missing something. Just what threat did the Ukrainians pose to the Russian leases to their naval and military bases in the Crimean?

If the government of Cuba were being overthrown by people even more hostile to the US than Castro, and shots were being fired, don't you think that there'd be reasonable concern for the safety of personnel at Guantanamo Bay? Wouldn't it be reasonable for the US military to act to protect those people?

That was my question too.

But then Paul says this: ..."yet there’s pretty good evidence that the Europeans as well as the American government had to contrive to have the overthrow of a government that most people say had been elected"

Therein lies the key. If the West really was actively engaged in subverting the Ukrainian government, then Putin does have a legitimate reason to move into the Crimea.

On the other hand, Paul could just be repeating Russian propaganda. In that case, Putin = Hitler
