Final OK for Georgia’s ‘slowpoke’ bill
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | 03-11-2014 | Kristina Torres

Left-lane lurkers on Georgia’s highways and interstates are a pen-stroke away from trouble under legislation given final passage Tuesday by the Georgia Senate.

House Bill 459 would allow authorities to ticket those who lollygag in the state’s left lanes. The bill makes it a misdemeanor for any driver on a divided highway who does not move to the right when a car going faster approaches from behind.

With the state House already signing off on the measure, all it needs is Gov. Nathan Deal’s signature to become law.

No it doesn’t, just see the fast lane as a sort of passing lane (or literally the passing lane), if someone is trapped behind you, or people are passing on your right, then you need to wake up and stop blocking traffic flow.

“So if you’re going the speed limit in the left lane, it’s a misdemeanor if you don’t get out of the way of someone breaking the law?”

I think there’s a reason they call it the PASSING LANE.

Absolutely stupid to add a law where none is needed.

This is another move to the police state that Freepers support.

When you, your wife / husband / sister / daughter / son / father gets arrested for this misdemeanor, the bitching will start. But all of you are for it beforehand because it inconveniences you. Make an inconvenience now a crime.

Watch the revenue generation stupidity expand.

There's a reason they call it SPEEDING.

“I’ve actually been blocked from speeding by a slowpoke only to follow him safely through a speed trap. “

I think we all have. I’ve also been waiting patiently for someone to move out of the left lane only to be passed on the right by somebody doing 85 in a 60 and watched him scream past a cop who promptly pulls him over.

And being forced to duck behind somebody going slower than the speed limit, just so a speeder can go by me, ain’t something I’ll do either.

People who do 1/2 mph over the posted speed think they have a right to ride the left lane for a far as they like.

And if they're over 70, their left blinker will be on.

A speeder is speeding. He is not "trapped behind me." If I'm not moving above the speed limit and passing the cars to my right, it's only because either (a) I have someone in front of me, or (b) traffic in the right lane is too dense to merge safely. Please be patient.

Chandler drivers are notoriously bad, particularly when it comes to running red lights.

I was just rear ended on a 202 exit because the jackass wasn’t looking where he was going.

You will be arrested under a law like this some day, and you’ll whine about it.

So, shut your mouth.

When you get arrested for this misdemeanor, of course you’ll happily comply.

LOL, nobody said anything about a situation where you are the one trapped behind someone in front of you, or when there is no way to move over.

Please don’t waste our time with the obvious, and with evasions.

To repeat:
“”Just see the fast lane as a sort of passing lane (or literally the passing lane), if someone is trapped behind you, or people are passing on your right, then you need to wake up and stop blocking traffic flow.””

CL, your logic would have everyone in the right lane except the one driver who is moving fastest in the left lane.

That is correct - up to a point. But this really doesn’t apply if you are in the passing lane and a car is blocking you. It also doesn’t apply (based on what I read in the article) if you are in the passing lane and there is nobody in front of you. This is important to me because southbound I-65 between Louisville and ETown is very smooth in the passing lane but beyond rough in many places in the other two lanes. I camp out in the passing lane (even if there is no traffic) until a faster car comes up on me, at which point I move over.

The purpose of traffic laws are twofold:
1. enable traffic to move as fast as possible.
2. Enable traffic to move as safely as possible.

The laws are a blending/compromise of those two somewhat contradictory goals. “Safe” is a relative term. The roads would be safer if the speed limit EVERYWHERE was 35 mph, but it would severely violate the first rule for marginal improvement in the second.

And the simple fact is that passing lane nannies result in road rage. This is a dangerous condition. Preventing them from doing this will make the roads actually safer for that reason and others while, at the same time, increasing the speed of the flow of traffic.

It is a win-win.

It's threefold. You forgot the most important purpose: Revenue enhancement.

Yep. And I would bitch to them.

One time I was a passenger with my brother on I-405 passing through Renton. He was talking on the cell phone while we were in the passing lane. I could see the cars building up behind him. I finally said, loud enough for him to notice, that he needed to get out of the passing lane. He said, rather rudely, “I’m on the phone, here!” To which I said, “Exactly! Get the hell out of the passing lane!”

I really would have smiled if he had gotten a ticket for it. BTW, it was legal then to be on your cell phone while driving.

Me neither, unless I want to use the speeder as a radar screen. I’ve done that a lot and on more than one occasion they not only allowed me to bump up my speed but they actually got ticketed while I didn’t. The key is to not be too close to them, though. ;)

But if you have to duck behind going too slow, the issue is not that you are blocking traffic. Rather, it is that the speeder is trying to intimidate you to pass faster than you are. He may be right, or he may be wrong. It depends on how fast you are passing, but it is a different issue.

This isn’t about some tiny amount of revenue, cops hate this dangerous practice of an anal weirdo throwing a wrench into freeway traffic flow.

A single car blocking the fast lane can cause havoc over all the lanes.

“If I can get over and let the speeder by me, I sure do! But I object to being forced to change lanes dangerously to compensate for some speeder’s impatience.”

Coming back fro Fla. Lexus LS-400. Doing 85 in the left lane and passing cars rapidly. Semi pulls up on my bumper. I can’t pull into the right lane because it’s full. Guy rode my bumper for a mile. I opened the sunroof, and tossed out a small handful of pennies. Then slammed the gas up to 120, and lost the jerk.

If you are in the left lane, and you are not actively passing someone, YOU are breaking the law.
