Here in the USA, burning coal is not the dirty air pollutant it once was, thanks to modern emission controls to remove the sulfur compounds and heavy metals from the coal in the exhaust stream. As such, it's still a viable source of generating electric power until something like the molten salt reactor design for nuclear reactors get commercialized.

here in PA. we use propane gas and WOOD...
we ran out of wood early in the season, we just were NOT prepared as we though we would be spending the Winter in the South..
been the coldest and longest winter we can recall..so we are now ready to begin cutting wood and not get caught short again!!! hate the mess it creates but love the warmth it makes...the difficult part is, we are now 76 and 71 and it get harder and harder..
