The orbits shown in this diagram color coded. The planets are white lines, and the asteroid/comet is a blue line. The bright white line indicates the portion of the orbit that is above the ecliptic plane, and the darker portion is below the ecl

The major danger is more than just an impact. What happens if a relatively small meteor explodes during atmospheric entry at speeds above 33,000 mph at just the right altitude? Imagine a meteor exploding with the force of the W80 warhead from the AGM-86 ALCM cruise missile at maybe at most a mile off the ground--the shockwave from the circa 150 kT equivalent blast could could flatten wooden and brick buildings and severely damage steel-and-concrete structures.

Note that this one broke up “At an altitude of 5–10 km” and still had a pretty good wallop, including “Vegetation was incinerated up to 6 km from the impact site.”

So much for little ones not getting through to impact...
